I am in the need to "somehow" take the rubber portion of my rub rail off so I can tighten and replace some of the screws that came loose underneath and some that have stripped out. Is there a trick to getting that black rubber part off so this can be done?

Re: rub rail

Mine was a semi-circle with a flat side extending beyond the circle making a short lip top and bottom. It is wedged in the extruded alum or SS runner. That runner usually covers up the joint of the deck and hull so there are usually fastners....sometimes pop rivets which serve the purpose.

To get it started, if you have cast metal caps on the transom corners or at the bow, removing them will give you access to the end of it and you can pry it out with a screwdriver. Once started, just pull it out. Going back in is just tuck one tab in and using screwdriver again, tuck the other tab in.

If you are not in 100 degree weather, gently heat the section you want to get under with a hair dryer. Then insert a screwdriver in the bottom and pry out the amount you need to do. to reinsert, put the top ridge back under the aluminum and using a rubber mallet, hammer the bottom up into the aluminum. it will snap into place. You may need to work it a bit though.
