Working on a friends 42' Chesapeake Bay Deadrise with him. The rudder comes though on top of the deck, linkage to steering under fish box in back. Water will come around shafts and out scuppers when under way, (prop wash). He bought the boat used last year and was told the water was normal.
We pulled for a few months to do maintenance and I got to check the rudders out further. Shafts got some side play and base looked like it was corroding. Pulled the rudder out and found there is no packing, nothing, it is in a fiberglass tube. There is a 1 1/2" copper tube around the shaft but nothing else. Sorry, not seen anything like this before.
Anyone experience with this set up?
