Hey guys!
Got this 175 running tonight I have been working on for about 2 months now (Part-time) and it fired right off, but I quickly done a leak-check and found all 3 fuel line nipples at the carb (Nylon) had a crack and was shooting fuel...I trimmed it up just slightly so the fuel would drip fwd and let it run for a few minutes to look some other areas over.
How difficult are these to change (Nylon elbow)...I see nothing in the manual about this, or I'm blind....
I've never had any leak, so all 3 is quite a treat as you all know how fun it is to remove all 3 carbs again.
Can someone tell me the proces for this procedure??
Thank you.

EDIT: I'm sorry, this is an '81 model....early model carbs with no top plate for Idle circut.

Kenny, I took a quick look and it seems the nipples are part of the fuel bowl, and not replaceable separately. Also they come up as No Longer Available.Maybe you can locate some used ones.

DHP

Are they cracked or just loose?

The old fix for the fuel bowls was to replace them.....when you did, ya' got aluminum bowls for replacement part....go figure.

Would the bowls from a later year fit? I noticed that the idle jet went in from the outside on the 81' bowl. Later years the jet went in from the inside of the bowl....don't know if the passages would match up.

Kenny: Would it be possible to remove these nipples, and press in a brass barb? By this, I mean, could you use a barb with a 1/4" pipe thread, and turn the threads off? I don't have one of those carbs to look at.

I haven't taken any of them apart yet, but they are cracked, Dhadley, each in the same place.....180Degs from the inlet side..????
By the way.....the new sierra bowl gaskets leak just as well as the older versions....what a joke.
I'll see if I can pop one of these plastic fittings off and see what might be an alternative...whether it be press in or maybe thread them...there isn't much room, as you know, between those carbs.

Re: Rude gurus...Carb problems-V6

This is unreal. I put my crossflow back on the Dusky and the exact same thing happened to one of my carbs Sunday morning.

Heres a thought -- since the fitting is cracked we cannot reuse it. (Mine just came loose and was dripping fuel -- Gel Seal is a wonderful thing) I have used the screw in elbow fitting for the tattle tale. Its too big to go in. I used a small grinder or a file to cut down the threads. Now youll have a bunch of barbs instead of threads.

When its the right size it will press in and the barbs will hold better than the stock one ever did. A little sealer for insurance and away you go.

Next!!

OK, That sounds better than Mar-Fabs Idea of calling a dealer that still has some in stock(Bowls)....
Can you believe Kurt gave all of the old V4-V6 stuff away last weekend..????!!!!!....including some carb bodies, bowls, etc....
I like your idea ....
So I just need to order 3 exhaust housing elbows for the T-Tail and grind to fit?????

Yep. Worked for me. I used the one from a looper I believe. It had the 5/16 barb. The one from a power steering looper has a 3/8 barb.

I really can believe Kurt gave that stuff away. What I cant believe is he didnt call me.....

I just ordered 6 5/16 indicator elbows from Mar-Fab, and we'll see how it works...
Would you recommend type-M or gel seal II????

Re: Rude gurus...Carb problems-V6

The fuel feed lines to each carb from the plastic manifold should be 5/16. From the motor forward the fuel delivery line should be 3/8.

I think either will seal it. As of Sunday, I've used both.

Fuel lines are all 3/8"up to the manifold....I put 3/8" on the fuel pumps as well....
I got 6 so I could screw one or two up and still have spares...I'll let you know how it works...
Larry said, "you're going to try what?????"
I told him if Dale said it would work, it'll work....ship'em out.

Re: Rude gurus...Carb problems-V6

I got to looking into these carbs and busted the plastic fitting off...the brass piece inside of it is only 3/16" inside diameter...wheels were turning so I pressed the fitting out, done some measuring and drilled the hole out to 11/32", and tapped it for 1/8"-27 pipe....I'd looked at some AN (aircraft) hardware and found some 90 deg 5/16" with 1/8"-27....a bit of "M" on the threads and screwed'em in...."JUST" clears the carb top below....done'em all, put 2-1/2 more hours on her and no leaks...we are Lake ready!
I guess I'll have plenty of indicator elbows in 5/16" if anyone gets short... :D

Re: Rude gurus...Carb problems-V6

I thought about the tapping deal but wasnt sure if you had enough clearance to fool with the position and still clear the carb below.

The ones I've done didnt have any brass sleeve inside the bowl inlet. It was just a plastic elbow with a straight side that pressed in. It had a small O ring on it too. I like the deal about it being threaded in. Nice to know it will work.

Re: Rude gurus...Carb problems-V6

The 11/32" required for the tap size is about all you can go, and I stopped about 1/16" from drilling clear through to keep the total sealing surface between carb-gasket-bowl....I could see when I measured it, I didn't want to go clear through, but needed to go deep enough to let pipe threads go as deep as possible...
What was interesting to me was that the brass the plastic was molded around, and pressed into the body, was only 3/16 inside, but the nipple itself was for 5/16???? Wouldn't make a darn if the fuel line was 1/2" in this case....the final restriction was in the carb...at any rate, it works, and when I pressure/vacume checked the needles and seats, I had a bad needle out of the new sierra kits as well...it looked fine, perfest taper, no ring, but would not hold any vacume.
Sierra kits will no longer be used by me....
Hey, thanks for the help!

Seems to be a lot of "Sierra=BAD, OEM=GOOD" going around these days.
