Just aquired new motor with first boat purchase. Noticed upper cylinder wasnt firing and getting minimal spark. I replaced points and condensers, coils, spark plug wires. I now have both cylinders firing but I am not sure if timing is off or carb problems. Currently I am in process of doing the seafoam treatment as suggested in other threads Ive read. Compression is 75 in both cylinders.

Previous owner said hasnt been ran in over a year.

I do not have a timing light or the jumper meters, I did not remove the key in the shaft when I pulled the flywheel however the timing plate below magneto moved a bit when I was replacing the stuff. I slowly turned the shaft and set points to .20 when it looked most apart, rotated 180 and did the other. Im new to boat motors, limited in other motors but figured I would get it a shot. Very possible I could have screwed something up.

Video link is below, any comments and suggestions greatly appreciated.

The timing is controlled by the key in the crank and point setting, you didn't screw anything up.
It sounds to me like you have a lean sneeze, try opening the low speed needle another 1/4 to 1/2 turn and see how it idles.
I wouldn't rev the engine quite so high with no load on it, could cause major problems.

Thanks, Im happy to hear that I didnt goof up the timing. I will try adjusting the low speed needle this week hopefully while on the water.

OK,

Daviet, thanks for the advice on no load revving, added that to my do not do list.

Update on the motor, I figured out that after changing the points on the motor I needed to sync the throttle. Per the manual there was a mark on the cam however I was unable to find it. After a few trials and errors I think I got it darn close. Took the boat to the lake and I was only one at the ramp so I backed in and test fired the motor for a few minutes and all seemed well. Took it out and ran around for about an hour but still had the Idle problems. Turning the low speed 1/8 inch at a time and waiting about a minute each time didnt seem to solve it, in fact it seemed like it only got worse.
I notice on my evin 9.5 the low speed adjustment only turns 240 degrees around however the johnson 9.5 can turn about 2.5 times around.
The motor seems to run very well mid throttle and wot.

Finally when I got back to the ramp and got it back on the trailer she idled way down in neutral I could even adjust the low speed ( not the rich lean) or idle lock counter clockwise and idle it down even more. I pushed back fully into the water and the idle problem reared its head again. When back on the trailer it was good again. Probably Im guessing a 10-20 degree angle between on the water and on the trailer. Im Starting to think I need to dig into the manual and figure out how to tackle a carb rebuild, perhaps I have a problem with the float.
I found an OMC carb kit on ebay ( looks like cork gaskets) or pick up a sierra one
any thoughs ?
