Re: Rules of the water ignored more and more

I had a simalar problem a couple of weeks ago by a boat with absolutly no consideration while trying to beach her, So I told my family that I will be right back, and chased them down and caught up to them pretty quick and hung back as I saw they were getting ready to beach themselves, so I waited for them to get close to shore and they noticed me sitting there watching them, as soon as they got closer I opened her up W.O.T and got about 25' behind them running along the shore and hit them with my wake, turned hit them again and then turn and did one more time till I created so much wake they could control their stearing and had a VEEERY difficult time themselves, I let off the throttle and sat behind them about 100ft. out and just sat their and watched them beating and banging around and they never said a word, just looking, I went back to my spot were I know they saw me the first time and just didn't care, well they past by about 2hrs. later and saw me beached and went wide around my spot and had consideration this time:)

Yeah- Thats what we need more of ---REVENGE---

Beats a good talking too anyday

Re: Rules of the water ignored more and more

This last Saturday I was out on the lake and returned to the dock to pull off,(we have two sides to the doc one side has 3 lanes and is graded real nice and the other is 1 lane and not well maintained) Well most people use the nice side of the doc but I use the other since I am usually alone or with the girlfriend that knows nothing about boating. so I pull my boat up and tie it off and get my trailer and back it into the water and as I am pulling my boat forward onto the trailer two jetskiers pull in between my boat and trailer. I asked them if they could pull off the dock for a second while I pull my boat out and they said no go around! Si since I already had the boat ready to go I just kicked it away from the dock but held the lines to where it was about an inch or two from there jetskies. I thought that was about one of the rudest things you can do at a dock, i would never pull between someone like that and than be rude about it. Of coarse they were talking under their breath to each other about what they would do if my boat hit them but it didn't. I am glad I am easy going and a nice guy or there may have been a problem.

Don't know what part of Texas you fish but most "parks/boat launches" around here have the "NO Firearms Allowed" signs posted (about the best maintained signs in the areas :()

Dern, forgot the original post
I still find more courtious boaters/fisherman than the rude/idiots in the areas i fish :)
Belive me they are there but thankfully they are still the exception & not the rule :)

I plead the 2nd Amendment, and carry a 12 gauge coach gun...and a rubber snake. Funny thing, I always catch the most fish when I fish near those pesky NO FISHING state signs. A fisheries biologist known nationwide taught me that one...when we were both about 10 years old.
Best way to avoid the a-holes on the water is go out when they are at work or in school. Stay home and enjoy family time on the weekend. That said...I don't look for trouble on the water, but won't be run over by the floating t*rds either.

Clear skies, bound for Shang-hai...

Ya up here in Pa its the same way. We fish and camp Raystown lake which i believe is the largest in the state, and ran by the Corp of Engineers and its just nuts on the weekends down there. Its not just the college age clowns w their daddys boat either, its middle aged folks too that should know better but they dont care.

The worst thing tho is the "bassmasters" when there is a tournament, makes me want to puke literally. They come wheelin up to the ramp ram it in reverse and dump off the boat and god forbid your using the dock at the same time..then they will make a heck of a rolling wake through the no wake zone..and if your on the lake fishin in one of their spots "the lake is nearly 30 miles long!!" they will run right up next to ya and throttle down real quick or zoom right past ya and rock the heck outta ya on purpose. Then they set out in pitch black darkness with no lights on, and when ya get to within about 100 feet they will flash em on for a second or two so you better be paying attention. They think they own the place, because they are fishing for $$$ and its a big deal for them. So we should just move aside or get off the lake in their eyes. Its sickening.

Ive been boating since i was a kid, my dad taught us all the rules of the road etc. and we have always been safe. You really gotta be on your toes this day in age and be prepared to do evasive manuvers on the water and make snap decisions, its to the point your life depends on it.

On a lighter side tho, when on the lake and have an encounter with an idiot i sometimes wish my boat was an old manowar with cannons on my port and starboard cause id be sendin some shot over their bow! haha Stay safe out there....Denny

get the numbers off of the boat. I do that and go to where the tournament is being run from. If it is a reputable group running the tourney they disqualify them on the spot. If not call the warden and let them take care of it.

Boss Hawg, where in East Texas are you based? How's the lake levels out that way? We're in Midland and generally hit O.H. Ivie (low), Brownwood (low), Proctor (real low), Alan Henry (not bad right now), Buchanan (real low), or LBJ which is constant level. Saw where there is only one ramp open on Travis right now and people are walking out there where the water used to be 20 feet deep..... gotta have some rain.

Ivie, Brownwood, Proctor, Buchanan and LBJ are all good waters...AH simply does not exist, just one of those "rumor" lakes. Very little water in Tejas worth fishing west of I-35, and I've got some beachfront property in Odessa for sale.

There is a very simple way to handle jet skiers when they take pleasure in buzzing a fisherperson. Always have a large Musky bait with you. Attach it to a rod you are not using and when buzzed the first time, pick it up. when buzzed the second time, make a cast with it so the skier can plainly see you. When you see them coming the third time, well -- I'll leave the rest to your imagination. Believe me, it works. If you are a little faint of heart, remove the hooks.

Guy up here thought he was cool going around in circles spraying water everywhere by a dock i was fishing at. Long story short I hooked him in the ear. After a nice little talk with him he was very quick to promise me he'll never do it again! It sure worked better than any other solution I've tried to come up with.

Re: Rules of the water ignored more and more

Last time we where out I almost threw the Granddaughter in the drink and the wife and I bail, because a boat coming up river WOT was coming straight at us. I already had my hands on the Granddaughters life jacket and then the boat veered off at the last second, they got to within about 50? of us and we were anchored fishing.

I hear you on the bass tournament guys, a friend of mine was out in his boat last summer and broke down. Several boats had passed by him without offering any assistance, very typical as I to have found out, anyway this one boat did stop and give him a tow back to the ramp.
When they got back to the ramp he was bombarded by the bass boats coming in fast to the dock and shutting down, the wake bouncing him off the doc.
he then went to get his truck and trailer to retrieve his not running boat and was told he couldn?t load his boat because they were having a tournament and it was check in time for them.
He being a very polite and humbled person didn?t argue with them, but did still attempt to load his boat with no one even offering any assistance.
In fact more bass boats continued to come in throwing large wakes and knocking his boat off the trailer several times, all I can say is I?m glad it wasn?t me there or Law enforcement would have been called to the scene.
This all occurred at a public ramp to by the way.

Jeff.

Just out of Lufkin, I fish Sam Rayburn 90% of the time -
Lake is lower than we'd like of course but no problems with closed launches or anything  June was real bad but this month we've been really blessed with more rain than usual for this time of year!
Hope you get some out there soon!!!!

Re: Rules of the water ignored more and more

Kind of a catch-n-release situation...did you aerate his gills before putting him back? Sounds like you may have talked some sense into his head. That of course is preferable to a treble in the ear.
What bothers me about the rudeness, obnoxiousness we see on the water and elsewhere is that it is growing...don't believe parents or schools are teaching basic respect/courtesy nowadays...some of the younger folks seem to think they have a right to "empower" themselves at anyone's expense with no consequences. I see a lot of this at the local university, so I address my students as sir and ma'am...get a few puzzled looks from the newbies, but after a month or so the basic respect quotient in the room goes up quite a bit and behavior improves. One of my peers says they need "prompts"/cues to learn and seemed puzzled when I asked if prompts were the same as the wooden rod the sisters used to use on us back in the day.
