Just got back into fishing. My 115 hp Johnson is hard to start at first. After warming up, starts fine. I have heard different ideas on running fuel out of carbs when taking boat out of water, or use sta-bil and leave fuel line connected. Any suggestions.

I think its best to cut the fuel off and run it dry and then add some sta-bil to the fuel left in the tank.

Total BS...ANY motor with multiple carbs will run one dry first..then zero gas OR LUBE that cylinder...
Stabil (fresh gas), till run through the carbs.. park it for a year...your fine

your top carb runs out of gas first, thus leaving the top cylinders without lube. i was of the old school of running dry. i have now quit that and use stabilizer during the off months, seeing i don't have to winterize, i start my motors atleast monthly.

I too was a " run it dry" guy, not any more when I found out about the top running dry . Sta-Bul is what I have used for a few years now.

I am moveing to Washington soon and will start winterizeing my motors, at least in my big boat. I fish in the winter with my 16 footer. Never give it a rest, fish 3 to 4 days a week all year.

I believe if you look at the OEM owner's manual for your engine, it will specifically tell you not to run it dry for the reasons given above. Anyone who tells you to run a multi-carb'd 2 stroke dry doesn't know what they're talking about.

Single carb'd engines are a different story, but you can follow the same procedure with them as well. Some think that even with single carb'd engines, it's best to leave the fuel in the carbs because it doesn't allow the rubber parts to dry out, plus, even if you 'run it dry' (or drain it), there is still residual gas in there which is certain to dry up and possibly leave residue.

IF (big if) a manufacturer recommends removing fuel from a multi-carb'd engine, it would be done by draining the system, not running it dry.

There are excellent winterization (i.e. lay-up) guidelines in the FAQ section.

Now THIS is the best strategy - live somewhere you can use your outboard like it's intended to be used, year around!
