86 evinrude 150 vro.
Is there any way to run the motor without the harness attached. Will be mixing the fuel. Would like to start tunning but boat isnt ready for it.
You talkin' bout the lead going to the control box beach? Yeah...you can start it, but might have a problem shutting it down unless you choke it. And you would have to jump the starter solenoid to get it going. Why not just mount the control box temporary and hook it up to the engine? What kinda tuning you wanna do anyway?
Mostly just see if it runs, newly acquired (ebay). I have jummped the sarter already to take a compression test 103-108 all cylinders so I am happy with that. Now I want to see if it runs.
Well, tried it without fuel and got good spark from all but #1. #1 sparked but fait compared to the bold blue spark from the rest. Would that mean replace that coil or is there anything else to check?
Beach....swap the coil in question with one that has a good spark. If the weak spark goes to the cylinder with the coil, bad coil.

EDIT: Or just swap the coil leads. It's easier.
I assume that home made stand is a sturdy one and that the engine is bolted to it. That engine has a lot of torque and will flip it if otherwise.

The battery must be attached properly in order for the charging system to operate properly, and I assume you've already taken care of that due to the horsepower factor. Running the engine without a battery could (and usually does) cause damage to the charging rectifier.

I'd suggest that you rig up a toggle switch between the powerpack(s) black/yellow wire and ground so that you can kill the engine quickly if needed.
beach

If it hasn't been run in a couple of years, remove the carbs. and clean them out with carb. cleaner and blow compressed air through all the passages. A carb. kit for each carb would be the best way to go, as it will have new parts and seals for your carb. This will clean the crud out of the carb. and should take care of your idle problem. More importantly. it will guard against a lean condition in any the cylinders when running at speed on the water, which could fry a piston real quick. I would also recommend a new Water Pump be installed, as sitting for that long without use will dry rot the impeller, causing big time trouble. Get rid of the VRO, if you have not already and Premix your own fuel/oil. That pump, unless it has been replaced lately, is just a time bomb waiting to go off. A couple hundred bucks now for all the parts, will save you a bunch later. Don't forget to change the lower unit lube and check for water in it.... Everything you need can be had at online sources.

Get a good Manual for it, too. Well worth the money.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/evinrude/order_1980-present.html
I was mixing the gas beacause I dont have an oil tank yet nor do I know if the system works.

Would the motor draw air thru the hose for oil causing the idle problem?
Hey Beach,

If it's not to much trouble, can you post a few more picture of the stand? (Front, Back, side close ups) I need to make one myself and yours is ideal.

Thanks,
pfistey1
