Running 2 sonars

I have seen some fishing boats that had both a main sonar on the dash and another on the bow for fishfinding near the trolling motor. Is there any interference when running these?? Currently I have one, and want to run 2, but I am curious as to how this is done without the transducers interfering with one another.

Thanks.

Re: Running 2 sonars

If the transducer for the main SONAR is on the transom and the water is pretty shallow and the SONARS are on different frequencies they can probably both run at the same time.

I just turned the one on the console off when I wanted to run the bow unit. I ran Eagle Cuda 168s on both.

I have a trolling motor mounted unit on the front of my pontoon and another operating off the back and they do not both each other. Different brands but the same frequency and generally in 20 - 30 feet of water.

I want to add a trolling motor mounted unit and I suppose that I won't be running them at the same time anyway, since I'll either be sitting on the bow using the foot control for the trolling motor or in the stern while truly trolling.

Thanks for the input fellas.

Re: Running 2 sonars

I always thought there would be major interferance problems, but my experience over the last few years says that might not always be the case. I have been running a HB 798/797 on transom and 400TX on bow trolling motor, which both use 200kHz and 455KHz has shown very little interferance. I think this was probably a significant issue in the past, but newer units have better filters and rejection mechinisms.

Re: Running 2 sonars

I was running two sonars on my older stick steer boat with only one head unit. It was a older model Lowrance. They had a switch which one sonar cord at the rear was plugged into and another sonar cord from the trolling motor mounted sonar was plugged into. I just flipped a switch to choose between one or the other. Don't know what brand you are using but check to see if your manufacturer has one.

Run humminbirds on our smaller boat and just use a switch , from HB to switch from one to the other , no problem !

this is 2 finders 1 transducer and a switch setup !:)

I run two, a Raymarine A65(transom), and a Humminbird 610(in hull) and they both work most of the time. Occasionally, dependent upon speed and trim, the Humminbird will get wacky, but the A65 never has issues.
