just rebuilt top end, replaced thermo w 160degree stat. still running hot, water pump has slight leak. ran @ 1500 for 15 min alarm sounded. gauge read about 3/4. yes thermo is in right. getting slight steam looking out hoses from valve covers to flame arrestor. no sign of water in oil or cylinders.

And what shape is the raw water pump impeller in? My guess is you have been starting this engine without water going to the drive since the manifolds were off. I would be looking at the impeller as the first step.

no, did not start until manifolds were on. ran on muffs, plenty of discharge water.

As compared to what????<br /><br />Have you actually checked the impeller? That is the first thing to check when you have an overheat problem.

no i haven't checked the impellor, because my trailer is so low as i can't remove the lower unit. it's going to the shop to have the outdrive serviced next month, new bellows as there is a very small hole it the shift bellow. i plans for a new impellor at that time. oil looks fine right now. change the Thermo again today and ran on muffs for 3 hours, no problem. we will see tomorrow. finally found a parts guy at NAPA that has an I/O big help. i had use an aftermarket thermo. the first time.
