I' ve got a 2006 Jeep Commander, and all of the vehicle and trailer lights work except for the trailer running lights. Does anyone have any ideas how to get my trailer running lights to work?

Re: Running light woes.

They run on the same wire as the tail lights. Make sure each one has a good bulb and good ground. A lot of times the running lights only have a single pawed wire and the ground is done thru the mounting screw. So make sure the are clean. Next would be to trace the wires to make sure the connections where they tie in are good.

Re: Running light woes.

Thanks for the replys. I had to refresh the page to see them. lol. No converter, but I'll check the wires and bulbs tommorow. I heard somewhere that jeep commanders have a seperate fuse for trailer running lights? Also i just bought an '88 Gamefisher 15hp. it looks to be in great condition. The guy said that his dad bought it new from a sears store that was going out of business and he only ran it for an hour or so. Since then it it has been in storage. do i need to do any prep. to it before I try it out?

Re: Running light woes.

3 main reasons for trailer light issues are as follows.

1. Bad ground.
2. Bad ground.
3. Bad ground.

Most other issues relate to a particular vehicles requirements.

Re: Running light woes.

The brown wire in the trailer wiring operates the running lights. If they are all out, check for power at the mating terminal on the tow vehicle. If now power the problem is the tow vehicle. If there is power on that terminal the problem is the brown wire, the bulbs (highly unlikely), or the ground circuit (white wire). You didn't mention if it was only the running lights or whether the turn signals were out as well.

I would think a newer vehicle like his would be set up for something like this from the factory. I see they have a separate turn and brake light setup unless it doesn't have the factory tow option

Re: Running light woes.

If your turn signals on the vehicle are different from the brake lights then there is a converter somewhere on the vehicle, even if it is a factory installed converter. This shouldn't affect the running lights but sometimes the wire does pass through aftermarket converters. I think there was a thread on here (or maybe it was a different forum I read) not too long ago where someone had the same problem and wound up by-passing the aftermarket converter with the brown wire to fix the problem. If it is a factory setup then it could be a fuse also.

Re: Running light woes.

Rule numbers 4, 5, & 6 Ken, is a blown fuse. My '06 TrailBlazer has separate 10A mini-fuses for left turn signal, right turn signal, and running lights.

Actually there is a fuse for six of the seven conductors on the round Bargman plug; all fused except ground...
