The reason to keep it at an idle when in gear is because the engine has no load on it and can easily over-rev. Specifically, within a second or two of nailing the throttle. Of course, this can happen out of gear also if the drive button is pushed and the throttle advanced. As was stated...common sense.

Too bad common sense isn't that common.
