Runs fine in neutral but wont run in gear

I'm working on my aunts bass boat and it has a 175hp 2stroke motor. the boat has been sitting for 3 years and I told her I'd get it running again. I put new gas and oil in, gave it a couple squirts of starting fluid and it fired up. So i stuck the motor in a garbage can and got the water to circulate through the motor. I took the boat out to the lake the other day and it fired right up when i put the boat in the water and then when i put it into gear it died. I started it back up and engaged the motor into gear and gave it some throttle and the rpm's would not pick up past 1100. And if i give more throttle it wants to die. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any ideas that i could try would be great.

Don't use startin' fluid on a 2 stroke period. It can dry a bearing out instantly and split it back at ya.

Carb or efi?

Hi caboussleman, Welcome to iboats!

Please post the year, make and model or your motor so members here can give you the most accurate answer to your question.

A couple of first steps that I would take with your motor is to test the compression and replace the fuel filter. That is a start then if you are still having problems follow the "awakening a sleeping outboard" steps at the link below.

my boat is a 1985 skeeter bass boat and the motor is an 1985 175hp mercury outboard.

I have pretty much tried almost all of the things ion that link i was thinking it had to be fuel related just by the way its acting. Where could i get a rebuild kit for the carbs. its an 1985 175hp. Also are there any high or low adjustments on them?
