Runs only when chocked

I just bought a boat it has a yamaha 25 lg outboard it an 88 or 87 I cleaned the carbs and now it only run when the choke is full it dies when the choke is off I dont know if I need to re clean the carbs or what???????

dont panic the yamy is agreat little motor,check the carbs they probaby need to be cleaned the float is most likely stuck or bad ,with the ethenol fuels today the carbs get microbes stuck inside.(I hope I spelled that right) It`s a cheap fix....<*)))-} good luck

Yes, sounds like a stuck float...or the float has a worn needle and seat.

You may want to just rebuild the carbs to start fresh...especially if the motor has not been run on a regular basis.
