Rusted Tilt Bolt

So I bought an 82 Seahorse long shaft to use as a kicker on my 19' Mark Twain. I am going through it before I drill holes in my boat for the bracket and I cannot get it to tilt. From the diagram I see on marine engine (attached) it looks like piece 25 is the bolt that everything pivots on and what I need to replace.

Any tips on removing this thing? I have whacked it a bunch of times, PB Blaster and added heat to the frame not a budge.

I saw one posting concerning cutting the carriage side off and sending it through in that direction. That looks like it would be difficult to grind away without removing the housing. . . .

Any suggestion would be helpful . .

You've got a job ahead of you. Heat, power blaster, pound, power blaster, heat, pound. They are a son of a gun to get out. I have cut of the other end of the bolt and tried it that way also. The last one I did I used a small air hammer to get it out. Good luck.

Why is that bolt not stainless?

It is, a very poor grade. With normal maintaince they usually held up pretty good. I did see one that was replaced with a standard carriage bolt once, I suggested to the owner to get it out and replace it with the proper one.

I seen one onetime that some one else did, they used a hacksaw and sawed it between the transom clamps and the pivot housing. they ended up with three pieces. when they put it back togeather they installed shim washers inbetween the transom clamps and the pivot housing. It was easier to get the bolt out in three pieces.

I had to do similar to the top pivot point on the tilt ram, and the bottom of the tilt assembly on a 1986 225 (my bottom tilt ram had a pivot that went through to each side of the enigne bracket , rather than just as wide as the tilt assembly). Drilling was the only way to get the two pieces out, started with smaller bits worked my way up to 1" bits. Drill a little then try pounding in the same direction with socket extension (that you don't care about). Be sure to get the engine and drill level, and be sure to drill in the perfect center. About half way through each pivot bar was enough to get the thing to move with pounding. I also bought a Drill Doctor (the large one) cuz the bits would get dull quick....if you produce heat you are not cutting, and would be time to grind down the drill bit...I feel for you!! Once you get it out...be sure to lube up the new one with anti-sieze and re-do it at least once a year. I do ..and so far so good.

I have to do the same thing on my tilt tube, but being a tube there is nothiing to drill out...and pounding it may mushroom the end...so due dilligence is in order.

So I got it out, had to cut it in the middle. I am also thinking that while I had it on the stand there was no way it was coming out. Anyways I used a dremel cut it in the middle and got it out. I think I am going to add grease fitting on the port and starboard bracket.

The next thing I am trying to understand is once I tilt this thing, how to I keep it tilted? Does that large U shaped piece lock it there? I am not seeing it and now I have it all apart.

Good call on installing grease zirks. What is your model number, want to look up your engine and look at the tilt lock.

huh I seem to be missing this piece.....good thing i went through all this effort to get the motor to tilt . . ..wonder if i can get a used one somewhere . . .

So the whole reason I am trying to get this thing to tilt again is so that I have the option of using a solid bracket for my kicker instead of a tilting one.

You seem pretty familiar with these motors, when it is in the "tilted" position is it stable enough to be going around a river with some pretty rough lobster boat wake?
