If your a smoker and aren't rolling your own yet, you might want to consider it. This past week I decided to get into it and I don't think I'll ever go back to store bought smokes again. I usually smoked 305 100's full flavor and they cost me $35 a carton, this past week I have been making my own and the savings are about $15 a carton:) I do mine using empty tubes with the filter already on them and a machine (premier supermatic) to inject the tobacco into the tubes. It's really easy and fast, you get a smoke that is actually better than the store bought one. The tobacco and tubes I use don't have any of the added chemicals or other crap the big company's put into theirs and I get to choose what type of tobacco I use and the style of the tubes as well. Before the anti-smoking nazis chime in, yeah, I know, smoking isn't good, but if your going to do it, I highly recomend getting into roll your own, it's well worth it for the savings and the many choices you get to make. Do a google search on RYO Cigaretts and take a look around.

Wife got the idea from a neighbor to do just that. So far she is averaging just about $10 a carton and actually smokes a little less. She invested about 48 dollars in a nice metal rolling machine and we have a local store here that offers good deals on the mixings. I would love it if she quit but at least she is saving money.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

My wife and I have been RYO for over 6 years now, we are currently paying about $6.13 bucks per carton, We use an EXP 1000 machine, three boxes of cig tubes are $4.00 and a 1lb bag of pipe tobacco is $14.39 which yields over three cartons of smokes, takes a bit of time to get used to it, but it really pays off, when a generic carton of cigs sells for over $40 bucks where I live now!

The initial investment in the machine was $20. but after two years, it has paid for itself many times over, and you can get them on the net for less.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

Years back I rolled my own, more out of fun and novelty than anything. Amazing how many people wanted to sample. Florida must have relatively inexpensive taxes on cigs if you can get a carton for $35. In MN a cheap carton of brand X is around $50. Even cigars and pipe tobacco has become very high priced. So far it's nice to see that you're being spared the "Don't smoke" lectures. Like smokers are totally unaware of the risks. Yeah, I got the memo. Don't smoke much any more except the occasional cigar- and often on the boat. And no, the boat hasn't ignited in a huge fireball. Mostly because there are no fumes to ignite.

Marlboro's are $54/carton, they tax the p#** out of everything here in Florida! You've never blown your boat up when smoking onboard? lol.

I do it sometimes as a throwback to how things used to be. My grandfather died before I was two so I never really knew him. From what I was told he loved boating and fishing. My brothers talk about how he could hold a fishing rod in one hand, pull his papers and Prince Albert tobacco from his ovrll bib, and roll a cig with one hand. Impressive since I can barely roll one with two hands!

I did that back in 1968, in Salt Lake City, when the Mormons would not let me buy a pack out of the machine at a local restuarant. I was 18 at the time. I sat in the restuarant booth and rolled my own from fixins that I had purchased in Las Vegas.

It was fun to watch the steam eminating from them as they walked by and watched me doing it.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

Roll your own is quite a bit different than in the past, the stuff we use, is loose tobacco, tubes with filters, Light Tubes and a machine that injects the tobacco into the tube, every once in a while someone will bum a smoke from me and always comment "What brand is that?" to which I reply my own, with the wide variety of items available now a days, it is pretty easy to make up a pack of smokes that are exactly like the commercial ones that cost $6 bucks a pack, it takes a couple of hours of easy work to make up 8 packs of smokes, we use plastic two piece packs to hold them in, the packs hold 18 instead of 20, but the cigarettes are thicker so it evens out. Using pipe tobacco, there is far less additives and chemicals than you find in commercial smokes and you can use it in a pipe with the mood strikes you. Always goes great with a slightly warmed glass of brandy!

Re: RYO Cigaretts

I hand roll my own each time I have one to smoke less, I roll in a slim filter and get about 180 cigs from 50 grams of tobacco.

Just to give some perspective, Sydney Australia...
A carton of cigs (200) is approx $125 Aussie and slightly more in USD.
A 50 gram ( a little over 1.5 Oz) packet of tobacco is approx $35 Aussie and again more in USD.
Anyone ever tried to grow their own?

I make 8 packs at a time, enough for my wife and I to get through more than just a day...

Of course those of us that smoke, appreciate the opinion of one who does not..

I know there are many in this world that don't smoke but why do those of who do, always have to have our chops busted? I don't understand, I was handed smokes as a kid when I was walking down the street, I got to watch TV ad's telling me to come on and taste me! The Army gave us an allotment of smokes each week. In my generation, you couldn't help but smoke. I realize things have changed, but believe me, we don't smoke to make those who don't mad, we smoke because we were told to smoke and listened to those commercials! Of course I was a child during Vietnam and am sure I suffered PTSD before I ever went in the Army, just from watching the nightly reports from the news on the days activities! So I guess I was prone to listening to the box!

PS. Spell check is your friend!

No, but it's an interesting idea. Not sure if the stuff would grow up here in the north.

Personally when I rolled my own, I had more people "bumming" from me than I ever bummed. And I was happy to share.

Sounds like somone has unresolved step parent issues.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

I may be wrong but I thought tobacco is illegal to grow here in the states unless you are a farmer who is registered. Again, maybe I am wrong on that. At least with the wife's cigs she is able to buy the tobacco in larger bags now so her cost is now about 7 dollars a carton.

I don't smoke anything, so this doesn't affect me, but I have a curiosity question.

Can you buy tobacco that doesn't have chemicals in it? I've always wondered how much of the cancer problem is caused by the chemicals that are put in tobacco to make it burn evenly, etc.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

The pipe tobacco that I buy is claimed to be the least amount of chemical enhanced tobacco you can buy, they say based on their promo that it is 98% orgainic, they do disclose they use bug control when it is growing and it is washed and cleaned before being dried and processed. Now if you can believe their claims..who knows?

I do know that I don't have a smoker's cough any longer.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

Here in Indiana you can only grow it if you have a tobacco base allotted by the government. If you grew 30 acres of tobacco one year and none the next you lose your base. That means that you are no longer allowed to grow it. Ever. I smoke and the roll your own at the smoke store are about half the price of a carton but they taste terrible. The ones I buy are Pyramid orange at 28.00/carton.

Re: RYO Cigaretts

Since starting RYO (about a week or so) I no longer have the smokers cough, I seam to actually be smoking less, and I love the taste better than any store brand I ever smoked. The papers I use don't have any added chemicals other than whats used to make them and the tobacco is advertised as all natural with no additives or preservatives. I can choose many differant types and styles of tobacco and I love having that freedom of choice. Today I began experimenting with blending my own out of several diff brands, good stuff so far. Like a previous poster, I too grew up in an era where smoking was accepted and widely popular. When in the service they gave them to us either for free or at a really great discount. I respect people who don't smoke and try not to offend them, I just wish they'd give me the same courtesy.

There is a RYO store here by me..You pay 20 bucks, pour the tobaccy of choice in the machine and load the tubes with filter attached.
They pop out like a good old days Vegas slot machine hitting a jackpot.
Only did it once, well because the tasted like crapapolloza!!!

I do smoke the Marlboro Red 72mm, a little shorter, a lot cheaper and enough cig to put the nicotine monster back in his cage

Re: RYO Cigarettes

Last year I decided to get into rolling my own because it gets so expensive. I smoke at least a pack a day. Found out a local tobacco shop sold in bulk by the pound and is close to 2 cartons depending on how hard packed you like your cigs. Starting out it cost me about $95 for machine, tubes and tobacco. Now just buy tobacco and tubes which comes out to $1.70 a pack. There is no fsc additives but brand I buy says they use an anti drying agent to help keep moisture in tobacco from drying out. Keeping tobacco moist in winter kind of sucks and have to have a good air tight container. If it gets too dry machine has a hard time injecting tobacco but otherwise I can roll a pack in 4 mins. It beats the time to run to the store when you run out and it's cheaper. I was thinking of growing my own and it's legal for own use and doesn't require a license here in mn. A local guy about 10 miles from me grows and sells plants for anybody that wants to do the same. You can get about 600 seed of the top 3 blends for around $25 so it's really cheap to start to grow the problem comes in drying space/time and shredding the tobacco to be able to smoke. The brand I use is "ohm bold". The shop tells me it's there top selling and tried some others and always go back to it.
