I've got a 2000 40hp Johnson, that had a trim and tilt motor quit this July 4th.
The pump motor was replaced, and ran OK. I did top the fluid off back then, but did not raise and lower several times and then check again.(I've seen this hint today on previous posts)
Now it's beginning to have the same symptoms of the original, and this new one has very few hours.
It's very slow up and down, and seems too noisy.
Each time I use it, I wonder if it will come all the way up.
Is this normally the hydralic fluid, or is this tilt tube area just not greased with light enough grease? (I used regular bearing grease that was in my grease gun)
The daytime temp this time of year is 55-60 degrees, and that grease may be too thick.
Any help would be appreciated.

If it's slow on the up/down and noisy as well then that suggests the oil is either compromised with air or water. If it's water then you've got a leak in the hydraulics. If it's air (and I would suspect this first) then it's either not full enough or it's got a leak in the hydraulics.
First put the trim up completley to the raised position. Use the manual overide screw to aid this. Use something to hold the outboard in the raised position. Now open the fluid re-fill hole and take a look in there. If there's no oil at the opening then top her up immediately. I use transmission oil over here, but follow the manufacturers specifications for your gear. Once full try the trim/tilt again and see if that makes a difference. It may need to sit for an hour for any air in the system to bubble it's way to the top, likewise it may take a few up and down movements to flush these from the system. Mine took 3hrs using the tilt once an hour to give the sir time to come to the surface and get back to the resivour.
Ross
