What is the difference between 10w 30 and sae 30 engine oil?
Im running a AQ240A Volvo (351 Ford)

The manual says to change oil using 10w 30 or 40 but all others say to stick with straight 30W

In actual reality the difference is little to none. Just make sure to change it at regualr intervals.

Having said that - why change from what your manual calls for just because of what others (or I ) say?

I run straight 30 in my 302......
I would think that the higher viscosity would be better for the stresses acquainted with marine use....My.02.....JK

Ditto on mine.The factory manual calls for SAE30 so thats what i run.

Multi grade oil 10/30-20/40 or any other multi grade is the viscosity of the lower number with a additive package that is suppost to make it lubrcate like the higher number. Its this package that wear out that make us change oil at 3000 miles today in our cars and pickups

the multi viscosity oils mean that they will be thinner in cold weather and then run like 30 wt as it warms up. If you use your boat in cold weather then 10w30 would be better. But if you only run it when the weather is warm then straight 30 is good. Use what the owners manual says to use.

SAE 30 in the last 3 motors. 302, 351(Fords), 360 (mopar). Just what they all call for. Even the Volvo outdrives use the same thing.

Oil Threads are fun because there's usually so much emotion involved. Of course emotion has nothing to do with the chemical properties of motor oils.

Testimonial information usually results in arguments (friendly discussions) since most people's testimonials are different. Not better, just different.

Lubrizol is the company that makes the additives that your favorite oil probably has in it.

I'm not sure how "emotional" simply stating that we are using what the owners manual and/or factory service manual specifies is, but if you say so...

Well,

I'm not talking about this thread (yet)...

If you take a look at "oil' threads here and on other forums.....some have gotten VERY heated and emotional.

It's just oil. Change it regularly, Use the type that the manufacturer suggests (today) , Go boating. It's about that simple.

Nowadays the manufacturers suggest multi grade. They do that because the oils have improved over the years.

The multigrades actually do reduce fuel usage because they are less viscous prior to getting to normal operating temps (unlike single grades)

Less viscous also means faster oil flow and less friction during cold wx start & warm-up etc.

It's probably less important in a boat since they're not usually operated in temp extremes like cars and trucks are.

This is not a new concept. Some aircraft engines back in the "old" days had an oil dilution system that dumped gasoline into the oil (pilot controlled) just prior to shutdown in freezing weather. The next morning, during eng start the oil would flow immediately to the bearings etc since it was pretty thin.

the gasoline would evaporate when the engine warmed up (DON'T ANYONE EVER TRY THIS IN ANY MARINE OR AUTOMOTIVE ENGINE!!!!!.......you just might blow yourself up! )

(the oil pressure gage by the way didn't tell you much since the sender was located in a main oil passage......like just about all automotive and marine engines.......it only told you that the pump was producing pressure......It didn't tell you that there was NO oil flow to the main and rod bearings etc)


That was in ancient times. Nowadays the aviation industry has multi-grade oils. Oil dilution is not used anymore. A lot of people still use single grade oils though. Preheating is popular. I guess we don't do this in boats either.


Anyway everyones dad, uncle, mechanic, etc... has an opinion on oil.

To help obtain optimum engine performance and to provide maximum protection, we strongly recommend the use of the following oils listed in the order of recommendation:

1. MerCruiser / Quicksilver Synthetic Blend, NMMA FC-W rated, 4 cycle oil.
2. MerCruiser / Quicksilver 25W40 NMMA FC-W rated oil.
3. A NMMA FC-W rated oil.
4. MerCruiser / Quicksilver 4-cycle 25W40, non FC-W rated oil.
5. A good grade straight weight detergent automotive oil per the operating chart below. //SNIP//


It's hard to disagree with the Quicksilver people!

And,....... Just to throw alittle Fuel on the Blaze,.......

I run 10w-50 Mobil 1 in my 4.3LX,+ 75w-90 Full-Syn.(Mobil, or Valveoline) in my Alpha 1 drive........

Both get changed at Winterization,+ at 50hr. intervals in-between.......

With just under 700hrs. on this since I built it in 98,......

I've had No Oil Related Issues..................8)

oil burns......it just starts out burning slowly....once it heats up, it REALLY burns! 8)
