I see quite a few new Boaters on this site.

"Please all" take a "USCGAUX" Basic Boating course, You will learn at lot & will be glad you did.

You will even be able to "Swear" at the other boaters you see on your outings, and then wish they took the Course.

Thanks- Safe- Boating.

BTY ,A great sourse for added info is "Chapman's " Manual, a great book for any boater to have for refrence & questions.

Thanks for bringing that up. There are lots of courses available, depending on where you live, could be volunteer taught such as with some form of auxillary, power squadron, lifeboat society, red cross.... or could be a for profit provider as well. Anyhow, as the others have said, take a course.

My wife and I both grew up on the water, we each had over 20 years experience, mostly hand me down knowledge from our fathers, some of it good, some bad. I finally got into trouble with some aids to navigation while in unfamiliar waters up north. I spoke to a coast guard fellow who suggested I pick up a copy of Chapmans Piloting. It was not long after reading the book that I signed the two of us up with the local Power Squadron course. I was amazed at how much we learned, and at how much bad information had been passed along to us over the years. Now I am not going to say I agree with 100% of everything that was taught in the course, but I was very impressed with what we did learn, and today we are much safer boaters because of it.

Re: SAFETY "1st For ALL"

As a newbie to power boating, it is somewhat amazing that such courses wouldn't be required; and that just about anyone can run a boat without a license. Perhaps it wasn't an issue 40 years ago when there weren't that many boats out there, but think about how many have been manufactured since then and are on the water now.

So, yeah, I've taken an online course and will also take the CG Aux course next month. Not planning to do any swearing at anyone, but definitely don't want to be a "swearee."

Re: SAFETY "1st For ALL"

I missed having to take a boaters course by a couple of months. Think if you were born after 1979 you are not required to take one. So at first i did not. Then seeing green and red bouies and knowing that it ment something i knew that i should know what it means. I would not be unsafe but i now know that i can opperate my vessel without harming the lower unit of my boat. I know what all that stuff means now too. Im going to start a "quiz" threan now. LOL it might be fun.

Connecticut boaters are required to take a course for boating (10 hrs.) and an additional 2 (?) I believe for a pwc.

My wife is going next month so I can wakeboard too.;)
