Safety shut off switch

Have a 1987 Mercruiser 5.0. with an Alpha 1. Was checking out the safety switch. To my surprise the engine cranked even when the lanyard from the switch was disconnected. This seems to be not correct. Or? Will be trying it out on the lake tomorrow. Perhaps the switch allows the starter to crank but disables the coil?

The kill switch only stops the ignition, has nothing to do with the engine cranking over.

dons correct but be a good boater and test the switch anyway.

After a winter long rebuild, I plan to test everything, especially this important piece of safety equipment.
