Re: Saturn Mini cats??

sinitre has a nice mercury quicksilver (new they go for about 1500 bucks) ask him, its in very good condition if I had an m4 and looking to upgrade I would buy in a heart beat. he already has the holes in the transom for wheels and rod holders.

For a lake actually you may be good with a 11 or 12 footer. It is beautiful when the water is flat.
I think that the floor space wouldn't be much more than the mariner 4 offers. But with a 9.8 the boat will be planing with speeds around 14-16 if not more.

See...I'm pretty much OK with mariner size....I have plenty of standing room ( I fly fish a lot) but would love a bit more. Where I live 3 of the 4 lakes are electric only, therefore I'm not looking foe a large outboard. I'm even considering uping to a foot controlled troller and a small 3ish HP outboard...... still haven't decided!

Stitch floor may not be that stable if you are standing. You are over 200 lbs iirc. But you could probably put a plywood piece over part of the floor where you will be standing.
I already told you I like the 3 hp idea... :)

Does anyone have any pics of their setup? How are these boats for modding such as I have done my m4?

I like the air deck for the weight but I'm seeing where lots of people are having issues, how do they compare to a wooden slat vs alum slat?

mrd, funny you say that I was out with sinister and he has an air floor he could nt stand and fish. I was stand fishing. air floor is a faster setup and break down. only thing I hate is u cant sit on the tube for to long behind starts to hurt, u need a bench cushion, sitting on air floor is awesome

Re: Saturn Mini cats??

wow glad to see a active thread discussing the mini cats, kaboats and regular boats air/non-air decks. I currently have a 12ft Kaboat that I got off ebay for super cheap to see how inflatables would suit me. I use it on inland reservoirs with a 55lb TM with my 4yr old and I got to say I'm really liking it though I think I'd like to upgrade to be able to take 1 more adult and 1 more kid. I'm thinking the XL Kaboat 16ft would really be the ticket "for me". I like that it's 4 inches wider to tell you the truth I like that the people/kids can be further apart when fishing vs the traditional boat having everyone so close together trying to cast/wrestle fish.

I'm actually making a plywood floor for my 12ft Kaboat this coming weekend and would prob do the same for 16ft if I pull the trigger and the project turns out well. For one the inflatable floor is thick so it takes up quite a bit of real estate that can be taken back if you go with a hard floor. 2nd I've had to patch it twice due to crappie spine going through carpet and the floor and that's only out of like 6 trips. I'd rather just have a hard floor and be done with it. Ok this post is getting long....keep up the good discussion guys.

Oh I have a 5hp evinrude that I've never really bothered with well mostly because a 4yr old is or at least mine is handful enough to be dealing with a outboard in a small boat so I've been sticking with the minnkota. Once he gets a little older and I trust he isn't going to fall out of the boat I might give it a go.

Re: Saturn Mini cats??

Weimed, remember the only reason I couldn't stand to fish is because I poked a hole in my airfloor so never had the chance to... In my Quicksilver, not only could I stand to fish with the airfloor, I also threw a castnet for bunker!!!. It (airfloor) was just barely noticeably different than the wood floor when PROPERLY inflated. Also, I never had a hole in the QS airfloor in 6 years (luck or durability? Dunno, but it is a fact!). The performance difference (at least in my Quicksilver, properly inflated) was NOT as big as some would have you believe. The biggest difference is tracking/ boat handling. The wood floor running length of the keel gives it more purchase and you don't go sliding/ drifting in turns... especially unpredictably since you never knew when bite would become slip/ vice versa when doing performance maneuvers. Speed and time to speed (throttle response actually favored the air floor in my set up. Weight and set up put it over the top and it is why the wood floor rarely saw the light of day on the quicksilver unless I had something specific in mind. I hope when I have the current issue behind me, the Saturn air floor performs in the same ball park as the QS. I suspect the Merc has a build quality advantage over the Saturn but for my needs the Saturn still is the better boat for me (at least on paper... time will bear that out).

The crappie spine comment above echos my greatest fear in that the Saturn airfloor will turn out to be simply not as rugged as that made by Mercury. At which point an AL floor is in my future.

I must have mis understood. So I guess air floor wins this battle

Re: Saturn Mini cats??

So, check this out....would anyone consider this a big upgrade from my m4 or not?Saturn 8.6' inflatable boat with aluminum slated floor SS260.

My only concern would be size.... maybe I should just hold out for an 11'

Slat floors mean hull displacement speeds only will be nearly impossible to maintain plane... if it can be achieved at all Kind of like a high speed snow plow, lol. 11ft is perfect for a single fisherman with minimal gear. The more gear you take.. the faster that real estate disappears, lol.

Weimed,

Not so much a misunderstanding. The issue never came up on the Quicksilver and the Saturn had the floor issue by the time I got out with you (had been punctured the trip before) You DEFINITELY can not stand on an underinflated [/I]airfloor. For the most part the idth and to lesser degree length of the boat determines how easy it is to stand on the floor (as the boat goes through lateral and longitudinal rocking motions in response to your slightest movement/ weight shift. The wider and longer the boat... the more stable regardless of floor type. That was one of the reasons I wanted the Saturn. The QS floor IS solid it's just a narrower boat and the weight is not disbursed over a wide enough area for my tastes (Think riding a surfboard vs a water ski... Surfboard guys can walk along the board and hang ten.. try that on a water ski, lol).

As for the winning of the battle I see it more the right tool for the specific job. Coping saw and hacksaw can be very similar in weight, size, tooth count but there will be times where one has a decided advantage over the other simply because it is designed to to domething "better" or more like different. With that advantage usually comes some other disadvantage. The perfect floor would likely be something like a hinged carbon fiber one piece that snaps in place! Would weigh nothing, be strong and have no puncture possibility, not sure about sea water durability but if good.... Perfect! The disadvantage... would cost more than the boat! Lol.

I have learned this quickly, I have a mariner 4 for now and have modded the hell out of it to be able to carry all my junk....and I consider myself a light tackle/gear guy!

I have a closet full of what I would like to have and think I need.. and the day of an outing I take what I think i'll use or what I want to carry... the two schools of thought have yet to come to an agrrement, lol. Hence the bigger/ roomier boat!

Even a better reason not to go with the cat. The platform is stable in that it won't rock or tip very easily, but since only the tubes touch the water, it "glides" very easy across the surface of the water. Trying to stand and cast from such a platform would be very difficult.

Good point....I think I've pretty much eliminated both the cat and kaboat....leaning towards one of the SD saturns

Saturn are pretty good boats. But Remember you will need more stuff is: transom wheels, electrichigh pressure pump, for an air floor make sure u get rod holders. U don't want to peirce it, buy a cover for the air floor (sin has a good floor cover). thats all i can think of now i have not had breakfast yet. i cant wait to see sinistre with his bimini!

Heck, I can't wait to see me with my bimini!!! Lol. Damned OT!!! Not enough hrs in a day.. or is it days in a week, oh well. Have some basic pics but we really haven't been taking enough of them. I will try to get the ones I have posted. I actually have more problems posting picks then vidoes. My stupid phone doesn't do USB/ Drive download and all transfers are via wi-fi which never works well for me!
Need to check when i'm due for an upgrade.
