Sammy Sosa was caught red handed last night. A broken bat in the 1st inning found to be corked.

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first inning of Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay right when umpires found cork in his shattered bat.

The Cubs had runners at second and third when Sosa broke his bat with a grounder to second that at first appeared to drive in a run.

But crew chief Tim McClelland gathered with the other three umpires to examine the bat. Cubs manager Dusty Baker came out and the umpires showed the bat to him.

Mark Grudzielanek was sent back to third base, the run was wiped off the board and Sosa was ejected as he stood in the dugout.
More

Maybe he needed to cork the bat in order to keep his numbers up after they made him get off steriods. I have never liked his cocky attitude and any basball player that cheats in order to compete against other atheletes should be permanently suspended and fined.

His excuse "I picked up the wrong bat". He claims to use a corked bat during batting practice and others do as well. This should not be allowed as far as I'm concerned so something like this dosen't happen.

If you play as much baseball as he does, you can pick up a bat and pretty much tell how much it weighs. That bat was lighter than his normal bats or was it? Since all of his bats could be corked.

Sosa of all players should not not go anywhere near a corked bat. He knew if the bat broke even in batting practice, it would not be a good thing for his image.

RANT OFF

It be so, Ladyfish. Sammy was corkin' it up. In the days of old when I played ball, you immediately knew that " This ain't my bat!". I can't help but think that Sammy knew exactly what he was doing.

Re: Say it Ain't So Sammy!!!

Maybe its time corked bats for batting practice should be banned so they can't use such a lame excuse.

I am a firm believer that ALL power hitters should be under very strict scrutiny when it comes to roids and bats. Pitchers would be next on my list to check carefully (not for roids but other little tricks.) ALL players should undergo testing at least once a month not the random checks they currently do. But hey, home runs and no hitters are what sell tickets. And I used to think boxing was the only sport that was crooked.

Like he didn't know. Always liked him and still do. He just happened to be the unlucky who got caught. Those who didn't are probably hiding them as we speak.....Pitchers are the worse what with all the things they try and put on the ball to gain an advantage...Tripping someone when they rounded bases were popular when I was growing up...ah those were the days....

It's bad enough that he did such a dumb thing but it's even worse that he out and out lied about it.

Re: Say it Ain't So Sammy!!!

What makes this even worse is that on sports radio, Bobby Valentine was making a feeble atempt at defending him by saying "corking a bat does not help a hitter at all!!" If thats the case then why use it during batting practice or at any time for that matter? Maybe they better check the winning bats of Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire and why not Roger Maris' 61st home run bat while their at it. Let's just see if there are morals and ethics in the game of basball. NOT.

Apparently on ESPN (I didn't see it) representatives from Authentic Sports Investments, take and saw the bat that Sammy allegedly used to hit his 498th HR with. They sawed it and there was no cork in it. Do you honestly think that they are going to saw a bat up on NATIONAL TV and NOT know what is in it ahead of time??

I have been a baseball fan for many years but this kind of crap ruins it for me. Unfortunately, its like the fox watching the chicken coop. Those who are suppose to watch out for fraud have a vested interest in seeing that baseball brings in fans and fans bring in money.

Like many baseball fans right now, I feel deceived.

I am not like most people. I have a different look on all this. I believe all players, in all sports should use what ever means they want to do better. Roids, Sand paper on the ball, Corked bats, or what ever. We all know it is gonna happen. If we outlaw it, only the real sneaky will get to do it. That isn't fair. Of course, life would be a lot better if they all didn't do it cause they had morals. But you know they will all do it, so let them all do it legit and level the playing field.

I'm with you, billy,

IMO, pro baseball has moved from a sport to sports entertainment anyway.

Kinda like pro wrestling.

I can't get into pro baseball anymore. Not since the last strike.

I get tired of three minutes of action packed into four hours. I also get tired of watching "so called" grown men spit, sniff, scratch and adjust.

What a bunch of pigs.

Personally, I am gettin' tired of all pro sports - 'cept fishin', racin', and raslin' - you know, the real sports!

Seriously, gave up pro sports a couple years ago - said I would just follow the college ranks. Now they are gettin' about as bad! Where is the fun of the game and the quest for sportsmanship? Big time entertainment and the almighty $ are taking the fun right out of it!

Give me a quiet cove, my bass boat, and a setting sun, and I will be much happier than watching these overpaid, immoral, arrogant, self-centered, jerks get paid too much for cheatin'!

Im with you djohns when all the salaries got way way way out of hand for the most part I have lost it for pro sports I will go watch junior hockey and baseball where the money stinks and they play to win pros seem more concerned that they not hurt themselves for fear that they will earn 4 million as opposed to 6 million

Pete Rose (Charlie Hustle) broke the rules and was banned for life, including the Baseball Hall Of Fame. :(

I will be really upset if Sammy gets off easier.

Re: Say it Ain't So Sammy!!!

Billyshears, I am ashamed of you, but I forgive you, as you are probably a youngster. What you say is the very thing that is wrong with society today. Like slick willy shaking his finger, and saying I have never had six/s*x with that child. As a child, we should all be taught to be honest, and never tell a lie, or cheat, but when we start competing, WIN AT ANY COST. If you cheat and win, what have you proven? If you were competing with myself, or another honest person you did not win, you cheated, and if you can take pride in your win when you were not playing on the same field with the same rules, and obeying them you are not a man, but a cheat. It used to be that stars (movie, music, or sports) were persons to look up to, they set an example for the youngsters that supported them, not today, today we are in the ME society, me first and be damned everyone else. Our biggest problem today in most every phase of society is lack of dicipline. In sports the penalty should be so severe that there is no way the star will cheat. Cheating should mean immediate dismissal from competition, as the saying goes if you cannot do the time, do not do the crime. But no, everone knows that hey if I get caught I can claim ignorance, and lie my way out of it (I did not have six/s*x with that girl). When our society becomes so sick that the President of the United States is such a low life leach, as slick willy was, and we allow it I guess we deserve anything that comes along. I forgive you that say "hey man everyone does it, go ahead win at any cost" yes I forgive you because you are probably young, and have been raised in a sick society, that is getting sicker by the moment. We are becoming a sick, undiciplined, cheating, selfish, drunken, doped up, society, and we have found the cause, and it is us. Oh well, at my age I will not be around too much longer, and maybe the great, hard working lovable, beautifull, generous, good neighboers we are will survive past my lifetime. :D :D :D :D :D :D

I couldn't agree more! I bought my hubby a signed Pete Rose baseball and card for his birthday to go with his signed Pete Rose baseball bat. We are both waiting for the day he is inducted. I still believe he will be.

Lakeman, you make some very good points!

There are rules in baseball, in the NFL, NBA and in every professional sport. Its time they are abided by and enforced. This sloppy mismanaged sport makes fools of many of us who still love the game for what it started out to be, the game we played as kids. Unfortunately it isn't the same game. :(

Re: Say it Ain't So Sammy!!!

Most spectator sports are becoming beat em up knock em down, give em action. Pro wrestling is and always has been a big fake put on show, as it was 60 years ago when I went with my folks to the armory on wednesday nights, to see georgous george (the dirty one) beat up on the good guys, till they got mad. The trouble is the legitamate sports are following the lead of the pro wrestlers, and putting on a show. The fights are faked, because the audiance wants action. I do not watch sports because I have always been a competitor (an honest one) if I am not in the action, I cannot enjoy watching it. I used to watch winston cup racing, but it is getting so noncompetative, i can no longer stand to watch it. i used to race motorcycles when I was a youngster, and there was very little cheating. Once in a while we would catch someone running illegal, but there was not much. I never cheated, because I could maybe have cheated and no one would have known the difference, but I would have known, and I would have known that I did not accompish a thing, if I was using illegal equiptment. I used to play basketball, and recently I was visiting a friend, and he was watching a pro basketball game, and I was amazed, as most of the moves I saw would have been illegal 50 years ago, even to the scoring, 3 points for a basket instead of the old 2 points. They traveled constantly, fouled each other, carried the ball, and you used to could not touch the rim, now I see them swinging from the rim like an ape in the jungle, is that where we are headed back to the jungle??? :D :D :D

Re: Say it Ain't So Sammy!!!

Lakeman, points well taken, but it is not just sports! Seems like everyone wants to cheat to get ahead! Look at ol' Martha Stewart! Not only did she lie to cover up, but insisted that others help her. And why? To save $40,000. May sound like a lot to us iboaters, but to a media darling and head of conglomerate that she was, this was peanuts!

She cheated, and apparently lied to try to beat the system. You mentioned Slick Willie, again lying to beat the system, Sammy, who knows - just read they x-rayed all his bats and found nothing in them, but why have a corked one in the first place?

I am not that old, but I was raised to respect others, do what was right, and above all, my word needed to be true, or I was nothin'! Where are all the others in my generation that were raised that way?!?!
