Here we are after a few miles out from Bayport, south of Homosassa, Fl. Son and I tried the skinny water to no avail. It was a slow day so no "fleet" to chase after. Made our way out to 8', took a dive and they were everywhere. Really had an easy time hitting our limit ( 2 gals each per person, max 10 gals per boat per trip per day). Took as long to clean em.!Just finished a scallop saute with some dry wine, butter and cream sauce. Fresh asparagus and some hush puppies; booyaa, we're livin right. :p. Here's the evidence!!

...Wow...I am craving some fresh scallops. That is living. Are the giant "day boat" or "diver" scallops out there too?

Do you get stone crabs that far north? I need to get back to FLA, I shouldn't have left Miami. I guess it is cheaper to go back now, though.

Yea it was a good day and this is what this lifestyle is all about. I had been without a boat for a few years and damn near went insane. Lots of serenity out there on that water, and just look at how calm and peaceful it is ;) There is no more commercial scallop fishing on the west coast of Florida. Like many of our resources, the commercial interests would not self regulate and almost wiped them out. There used to be sizable colonies off Charlotte Harbor and Tampa, but not today. This season runs from today untill Sep. 10.All we have here are what is called the bay scallop, and that is about all I have ever seen. And yes, the stone crabs run off our waters as well. Saw some juvy's while diving today.

We went out to Homosassa Firday and stayed all weekend. Found a ton of scallops. Although, Friday we were invaded by jellyfish. Got stung several times, but still had a blast. You are right...This is the life. We have everything we need right here in Florida---a boat and the Gulf.

Oh yeah, the jellyfish were all over us. Had to go back on board and wear the shirts. They could still get your neck and hands tho. At least the stinging was mild and didn't last long!!
