Re: Science Fair

You guys are awesome! The science fair is Feb. 2. Drop dead for getting the water would have to be Jan 27 so we would have time to put the results on the board.

Re: Science Fair

I have in my posession one free Taco Bell cup full of Santa Monica Bay water retrieved in Malibu. Had a surfer go in for me . . . that was actually kinda fun standing there, suit, tie, the whole deal and saying "excuse me, could you get me a cup of water please". "Salt water?" "Yes, please." "Well, okay . . ."

Heading to UPS after meetings. Good luck!!

Re: Science Fair

QC, Thanks so much. She is going to have such a great project. It will be so cool to show the comparisons of water collected from all over the place.
We all had a laugh picturing you on the beach in a suit asking a surfer for water.
I think we will even copy some of these responses and print them on her board.

Re: Science Fair

Hey Sailor! (I've always wanted to say that) :D

Last night (Friday) when Mrs.Link got home we were discussing plans for the weekend and I had her read your request. She wanted to go out right then with a flash light to collect samples!

Instead she printed out a kind of crude map using "mapquest" that shows where the Pacific flows in through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and comes on down to the south Puget Sound where we live.

We thought your daughter might like to see a map of that and how far inland we are. Plus the water flow.

We are going to take three samples from different areas. And provide pic's of the area also.

Like SW or should we say TLC we will over night. ;)

Go to:
www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Northeast.shtml
This is a map showing all the weather buoys in the north atlantic.point your mouse on a number and click it.You will be connected to the streaming data from that buoy.Scroll down through the data and at the right most part of the screen there is a salinity reading,on many but not all of the buoys.Just go through them and see which ones have a salinity reading today. You can go a bit deeper and mine these data for different dates. Most have a 2 year data archive. Some have 5 years. The same works for south east, southwest and northwest. In the North west sector there are drifting weather buoys owned by the Canadian Government. They travel with the gulf stream and they give data from a different position every day.
Good luck.

Re: Science Fair

Quick question. How are you guys packing the wawa? I headed to the Mailboxes etc deal and realized I didn't have the addy unless I was online . . . ooops. No biggie as it can easily still make it, but I am curious how the rest of you are packing this stuff. Any weird glances when you drop it off? I hate weird glances ;)

Re: Science Fair

Sailor, I checked with Ghana, and I am sorry to report that I cannot meet your deadline. Please forgive me. If only I had known sooner. My sincere apologies to you and your daughter.

Re: Science Fair

Thanks aspeck. We are just thankful for your interest. I think I will print the entire thread for posting on her project. I want all you guys who have shown interest to be included.
QC, you may have already shipped. But heycods did a pretty good job with packaging. He put the water bottle in a container with a lid. I believe it was one of those zip tie containers. Then he just put papertowel around the water bottle. It worked very nicely.

Re: Science Fair

Sailor,

The UPS tracking number is 1Z85127X0244560990, tracking should be available on-line tonight. It should be there Wednesday.

This sample was taken where Sunset Blvd. collides with the Pacific Ocean at a reasonably famous restaurant called Gladstone's. The same Sunset Blvd. as Sunset Strip, the one that is a favorite freak-show tour of Southern California, right through the heart of Hollywood. Also, more sample location trivia, this beach was closed two days prior due to a particularly nasty sewage spill  so who knows what's in there . . .

Date taken: Jan 20 Air temp: 65 F Water temp: 54 F

GPS Coordinates: N34 02.261 W118 33.220

You can actually get a fairly decent print from Google Earth if you are looking for more things to put on the display board.

Again, good luck :)
