I have been on this forum before but lost my user name and password info so here I am since I know I always had gotten good help.

Today I got into a shoal of rocks and boogered up my prop fairly bad but my skeg is OK. Only thing is that now I am out of gear or hopefully there is a shear pin or some sort of safety device that saved my outdrive from more damage. My shifter seems to function but without the thrust it is much more loose in going forward and reverse.
The prop does not rotate but out of water by hand it rotates freely in a clockwise direction but stops after a quarter turn going counterclockwise. I'll need a new prop but I sure do hope there is a shear pin and if there is ... just how easy is it to get to it. Thank you very much. Please help.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,..... Again,.... ;)

There ain't no shear pins on outdrives, only on tiny outboards,...

Could ya shift it, 'n turn the prop in each gear,..??

Probably oughta just Pull the drive, inspect the shiftin' issue, 'n manually check the drive's shiftin',....

Welcome back.... so first we will need the "usual" information: outdrive model/serial number, engine model/serial number, history on the drive/engine.

Sorry...no shear pin. Sounds like your shifter is in FWD, because out of water, in FWD, you can turn the prop CW, but it will lock CCW. If it does not turn with the engine (and because of the symptom/cause you provided), you may have broken your vertical shaft, or buggered up/stripped your upper gearset. Other possibilities (although less likely) are blown coupler, broken u-joint, spun prop. Drive will need to come off to check it out further, drain oil, check for metal. With drive off, you can start diagnosing how things do or do not turn, and what is the status of your shifter. Good luck!

Thanks guys for getting back to me. This is a Sterndrive Engineering outdrive in a 17 foot runabout Glastron and the engine is a mercruiser 4 cyl. Both are replacing an older situation as these units have less than 90 hours on them.
They are like new.

No shear pin huh? Well that settles that. I did think that maybe my prop splines were ruined as they are probably softer metal than the shaft has. I am getting nervous. It sounds like it could be bad. Spun prop would be an awesome problem at this point. I am so sick about it, I just got it in the driveway and there it sits.
Later on tomorrow I will pull off the prop and see what happens from there.
Why don't these things happen in the winter when I don't have to use the boat? :cold:

I'll be back. I think the shifter is in N. Maybe something is broken that it gets hung up turning CCW by hand.
I did not hear any grinding or anything banging around in there when using the shifter either way. It was as if there was no prop at all on the end of the shaft if you can imagine that.

Here is a link to a PDF diagram of my lower unit.

Re: SE106 prop hit the rocks and left me adrift

I think I am in great luck here. It appears to be a "spun prop" as the guts of the prop are crumbled. My shaft looks good except for debris left from the guts. Now, I wonder if somebody knows the fastest and cheapest way for me to buy a new one and from the numbers I have found here and imposed on the images, what is the right one? Thank you all kindly.

I do plan to make sure that the shaft spins properly using a hose and muffler before I take a huge sigh of relief.

I am parts number challenged. I have been looking here on iboats. I can't figure which one is right and I think I am going to call iboats now. Hope they are patient with me. Just got in from using the muffler and garden hose and the shaft looks good going forward and back. No bad noises. I think my hub kit is what saved me. I guess they serve the purpose of a shear pin. :encouragement:

LATE EDIT: Called iboats and ordered a prop for Friday delivery. Hope it is the right prop. They seem to think so.

Don't forget that SEI have a no-questions-asked warranty, so if you do still find something wrong in the outdrive, and its less than three years old they will fix / replace it even if it was driven onto rocks!

I am already back on the water without any problems. Bought a Solas amita prop from iboats and it works just great. Great deal too! Fast shipping great customer service. Yehaw! :congratulatory:
