I am looking for a repair manual for this outboard. Model # GG18736 S/N 16X801196

Also, I can not get the pull to engage. Everything turns freely, but the spring is not activating the cog to grab the flywheel. Any suggestions?

Plus I need a prop. Does anyone know where I can find the right one inexpensively?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Sea King 5hp Reapir Manual

Your engine was manufactured by Gale, a division of OMC, Adam. I don't have the year of manufacture.

It is identical to Evinrude and Johnson engines of some series. My guess (and that is only a guess) is that it matches the Johnson TN series 5hp engines made from 1950 to 1953. That was during the period that Mongomery Ward was buying Sea King engines from Gale.

Paul Moir can verify (or correct) this, and he should be along within the next few days.

Good luck. :)

Re: Sea King 5hp Reapir Manual

Since that's one of the later ones it's like the later Johnny/Rude 5.5hp engines (Johnny CD series, Evinrude "Fisherman"). Just get a prop for one of those. They pop up from time to time on ebay. Search for:
(5.5, 5.5hp) (Johnson, Evinrude) propeller
Alternatively, Iboats will sell you a shiny new one with a good hub for a mear $66. Use the 8 x 7.25".

The starter - is that the one with the nylon pawl that sticks out and engages the raised edge at the rim of the flywheel? Is the pawl not moving when you pull the rope? Sometimes they just need a good cleaning, but be careful removing the hub because the recoil spring which runs between the housing and rope pulley can be very dangerous.

Re: Sea King 5hp Reapir Manual

The same motor was made in both '61 and '62 by Gale -- manuals are available at www.kencook.com. The lower unit IS the same as the 5.5 Johnson/Evinrude of the time and as mentioned, the props are as common as dirt. A prop repair shop probably has more than one or two hanging on their board.

The most common problem with the recoil is the ring around the interior hub - either the springs that pull it are broken/weak, or the hub is too tight. In any case, do not remove the center screw without firmly holding the hub and pullley in place -- otherwise there will be a small explosion of springs and other parts. I use a small clamp to retain it while I play with the small springs.

The powerhead in the gale models is slightly different than the other OMCs.
