Hiya,

Just to let other Canucks know... Seafoam/deep creep is available from "Piston Ring/Auto Value" in Canada. Piston ring is a subsidiary of Auto Value, but the guy at PR wasn't sure if Auto Value was carrying it or just PR. Piston Ring has outlets in the west and into Ontario. I think "Auto Value" is more coast to coast. Maybe if you have an Auto Value close to you, you could get them to order it in from Piston Ring if they don't stock it themselves.

Anyway, they had a display right by the front door and the guy said "people are going crazy for that stuff"... Deep creep is $11 /can, Seafoam is $9.99/can. I bought 2 seafoams, and will try it out this weekend.

thought some might be interested....

Brent

Thanks! There's an Auto Value location fairly near me. I'll give it a shot and report back.

Re: seafoam in Canada - yup!

I mixed up a can of seafoam with about 1 1/2 gallons of mixed gas and ran that through 2 of my engines 1) 1970 25 hp evinrude that's new to me, and has new ignition etc and 2) 1982 15 hp evinrude that I've had for a while, and didn't do anything to this year. (not even new plugs -yet)

Both smoked a bit (not a crazy amount) when running the seafoam through... I'd shut 'em down for 1/2 hour and then run again for a while. I didn't notice a big difference in the 25 hp, maybe because I'd just done a carb clean/rebuild... I did notice quite a bit of change on the 15 hp... It idles down lower and smoother than it did before (which I always thought was pretty smooth). It used to shut down when you turned the throttle to the slowest position, but now when you turn it all the way down it keeps purring slowly and you have to use the stop button to shut it down.

So, in my estimation that was worth $10! Good stuff... I've got a couple other motors that I use less frequently don't run quite as smooth as these 2, so I'm anxious to see if they'll smooth out too. It's worth a shot before I starting wrenchin' on 'em.

Brent

Re: seafoam in Canada - yup!

Decarbing is a 2 part process. The first part is preventative, done by using a fuel additive to prevent carbon build up. SeaFoam is one such fuel additive and can be found at most auto parts stores. It also works as a fuel system cleaner and should be used as a preventative maintenance procedure.

If Your intent is to REMOVE the existing carbon buildup from the cylinders, heads, and rings, a spray decarb solvent product, such as SeaFoam Deep Creep, is needed to do the decarb process. Free moving rings are what seals your cylinders and gives you compression. Compressed and stuck rings means loss of compression, broken rings, and eventually, engine failure.

Run engine at fast idle, with engine running and warm, slowly spray liberal amount into each carb. Its gonna smoke up the place.
Spray for a couple minutes, now spray a larger amount into the carb(s) until engine chokes out and stops.

Remove spark plugs and spray the decarb product liberally into each cylinder, install the spark plugs, let it soak for an hour or more.

Start the engine and run at medium throttle, or if at the lake, run it at full throttle. It won't hurt to spray some more through the carbs. Run it for atleast 10 minutes to flush the crud out of your engine. Now remove and clean, or replace the spark plugs.

It works well to do the spraying, the night before you go to the lake. This way you can let it soak overnight, and run at full throttle at the lake.

Don't do this in front of the garage door or the house, unless you want it covered with greasy black crud.

THe spray and soak with the DeepCreep will remove more carbon than just running it thru.

I haven't seen Seafoam anywhere in my area. If anyone knows where I can find some on Vancouver Island please let me know.

Phaedo, my local NAPA dealer has started carrying the product this season. Check with you local outlet. There are other brands that will do the same job but are not widely mentioned. Canadian Tire, OMC (now BRP) and Merc all have there own brand of decarb products under different names.

Thanks for the help RodC. I'll check NAPA and see if they have it out here.

Sounds like this stuff is becoming more and more popular. Couldn't find it locally anywhere last season and now I have come across 3 sources this season.

Re: seafoam in Canada - yup!

I haven't seen a comparable thing at Cdn tire... maybe I've missed it, but I did look. I did consider mixing up my own too... there were some threads about that a long time back... If I recall correctly (I might be wrong) it's a mixture of mineral oil, naptha and acetone (?).. the proportions were in the posts... problem was, I wasn't too confident that whatever "mineral oil" I'd get would be the same or close enough. I think there are lots of different types with different volitilites. (?)

Seemed a bit too adventurous for me... especially since I can get it locally (but it's $10 a can).

Start the engine could result in a bent rod from hydrolocking. I would turn the motor over with the starter without the plugs first, blowing the excess out, then fire it up.
