I'm going this afternoon to look at a Johnson Seahorse 10hp. The gentleman sent me 2 pics of the ID tag but I can't make out the model and serial #'s. Any other way of finding out the model # and age of the motor. Ive posted 2 more pucs in the comments below. Thanks

Thinking 1960 model.-----Make sure you hear it run and listen for that loose wristpin bearing / bushing issue.--A known problem on these earlier QD's

Very nice motors, easy to fix and will run just about forever. As long is the compression is strong and the lower gears are good it is an easy motor to fix up and get you on the water.

What kind of value would you out on it. The owner says it is boat ready to run

In my area it would a $200 to $300 motor in running condition.

Make sure there's not water in the lower unit. The 1958 & up 10s used the base of the 5.5/7.5 lower unit as a starting point and did some slight upgrades to it. However, it was still a bit stressed and won't take a ton of abuse. If it is run with water in the lower unit oil, it'll hog out the pinion gear's bearing and eat the gears.

That said, they're decent motors. They will NOT take a 50:1 mix, though. Need the 24:1 oil it to help keep the wrist pins from getting beaten out of it.
