Which side goes in first to the gear head, metal or rubber? Motor is a 1964 60 Hp.

The lips must always face the medium to be sealed, because then the inside pressure increases the lip's force onto the shaft.
So the inner seal's lip faces gear oil, the outer seal's lip faces water.

I think there is only one seal used on that application.

There is only one seal. The picture is the seal I have, I pictured both sides of it. This is for a Prop Shaft Seal.
