Hi guys . I am in the process of resealing my upper gearcase. I have ordered the seal kit and new impeller kit with the basket. My question is , is there anything i should be looking at or paying special attention to or gasket sealer in any location other than what my book says. I do have it apart and the only damage i have found is a bad impeller and cracked basket.

The only thing I would suggest is that your use carburetor cleaner and a brass wire brush to clean off all the old gasket sealer. Oh, and make sure you have some Loctite 680 to hold the impeller key in place.

Thanks for the reply. I got two more questions though. 1- can i use thread sealer for cylinder head bolts to seal the four water pump bolts. 2- can i use a marine grade 90 weight gear oil in the upper gearbox or is there a special oil. Dont want to burn it up

I would advise against using the thread sealer. OMC is pretty specific about using gasket sealer in those areas as it has a specific consistency and is designed to work in that environment. Pick up some of this: Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant, 4 oz. : Amazon.com : Automotive It comes with a built in brush applicator in the cap that allows you to work it into all the areas you need to as well as apply it evenly.

The 90 weight oil is fine. If you have an electric stringer drive, you will need the Type C oil for the lower.

Thanks i will lick it up. I was suprised how easy it was to tear apart and replace the seals. Problem is i replaced every seal i could find and i still have extras in the kit. The kit is from marineengine .com and for a stringer drive thru 1986. I have an 85 which is the last year for the striner i thought. I hope the parts are

Post up a picture of the remaining, unused seals so we can see where they go.

When you reply, there is a button above the area where you type your text that looks like a picture. Click on that.. A window will appear that has a tab on the top of it called "From Computer". Click that and then click on the "select files" button. That will open up another window where you can find the picture saved to your computer and add it.

Not sure if this worked or not so i will also describe them.i used a book to replace the seals and found every one shown in the book but still had 2 larg o rings like about 8 inches in diameter and 4 smaller o rings about 1 1/4 in diameter. I did notice the gasket kit is marked 78-86 stringer drives. I thought they where cobra drives in 86 could these extra seals be for a cobra?
