seals in my lower unit

i just got my 68 18hp rude running today with a carb rebuild and i pulled the lower unit for new pump impeller. the lower unit case is the two part type. the gears looked great but there was water in the case. i clean and resealed the case but im not to sure that the design is the greatest for water intrusion. is there any suggestions on this type lower unit?

That design was used for over 50 years on a million of so motors. I'd say it must be pretty good. If it leaks it is because the seals and/or shafts are worn out. OR improperly repaired. Do it right and use good parts and it will last another 40 years.

Yea, I say give her a chance. Reseal the gearcase and change your lube at least once a year in the fall, especially if you have winter. I'm a newbie and recently did a reseal. We'll see this summer how she holds up.

Thanks guys! Yeh i also have a 71 25hp rude with the same design. ive replaced the gears on that model as well. i just wanted some opinions on the lower unit seals. i wonder why the design are not on any newer outboards? much easier to work on.

Fact is, the shape of the newer motors provides better performance. Those old ones weren't exactly very streamlined. All things considered, if it were not for better ways of building stuff, we couldn't afford the new gearcases.

Change happens slowly. Designing and tooling to make a new one of something as complicated as a gearcase requires a huge investment of $$$.
