Congrats. Glad to hear you like the boat and you were able to make the deal happen. You've got a couple of common problems here...can't go into reverse now all of a sudden? More than likely the shifter cable snapped, but it could be something in the lower unit. It stumbles when you punch it and now it's having a hard time getting on plane? Sounds to me like it's running rich or on bad gas.

I'm going to go out and take a wild shot at it, but I'd bet the fuel in the tank is old and bad. Your carb is probably gummed up and needs to be cleaned and the tank should be cleaned too. At least drain it and fill it with good fresh gas. I could be wrong, but the few problems your having sound like a boat that's been sitting for awhile.

My 1984 19' bowrider was EXACTLY the same way. Even broke the shifter cable coming back into the dock, just like you. Probably my 3rd trip out on it.

The problem could also be a clogged filter or a pump that's not working to provide enough pressure. It won't be terribly difficult to figure out what's wrong with it. Sounds fuel related.

stumbling is definately fuel related as it is affected when choked. the gas was aparently drained and filled by the shop i got it from but who knows really. the problem is intermitten. B.I.L. suggested to fill the tank and run it, then add fresh gas when low and run that. by then it'll be very aparrent if it is starting to clear up or if the carbs need to be taken off.

as for reverse dont think the cable is snaped since it's trying to engage reverse (from what i can see under the cowl) just not going in. on land if I shift the boat into reverse (motor off) i cant spin the prop so to me it seems that it is engaging? slightly out of adjustment? would this be relevant to the excessive forward throttle movement?

now i just need to figure out where to start the "build"
thread since the hunt is over and i dont plan on doing a complete rebuild just fixin and setting up like I want it
