Are you saying they are required to pay difference, continue all benefits including seniority, bonuses and insurance coverage? That runs Sears about $10million a year. I don't think so. I agree that they are required to "rehire", but that is a far cry from continued employment, which is essentially what Sears does.

Yep, and that includes merit pay and promotion pay. I don't know of another company that does that. Law requires companies to provide a job, not necessarily "their" job, for those returning. I was left with the impression that Sears provided them with their original job.

I guess I'll have to reconsider my policy of avoiding Sears.

Twenty years ago, when I was young and dumb (as opposed to being old and dumb now), I bought into one of those "Life-Time Front-End Alignment" deals Sears offered for about 3X what a regular alignment cost, believing it would pay me back since I keep my cars ten years or more. The first time I return, the manager tells me he has bad news, that my passenger-side spindle is worn and needs replacement because "whoever installed the front struts (my trusted mechanic), they didn't torque the bolts properly and the resulting movement ruined the knuckle and spindle... $400 to replace...Good news is I have it in stock and can be done right away" In disbelief, he shows me it on the lift, and the spindle rattled around like a bucket of bolts? all I kept repeating to myself is, "how the h*ll have I been driving this car without feeling a nasty vibration with this?" I came to my senses, told them to forget the alignment, and drop the car... Much to the dismay of the manager who pleaded with me to reconsider and that I would die on the way home driving the car. Of course, it drove home fine, and I could clearly see where they re-tightened the strut bolts (and torqued them properly), and my regular mechanic confirmed that I was in good shape, the spindle was fine. I vowed then and there I would never return to Sears again. About a year later, Sears was brought up on charges that they were pulling this sort of monkey business on their customers and that it was a pretty widespread problem. It only confirmed what I already knew? %$#@@^## b*stards! That car continued to be driven another 190,000 miles and 17 years without ever having a problem with the knuckle or spindle.

So, I guess I should reconsider. If they treat our service men and women this good, I will absolutely support them.

Not to get off the track here but when i went in 1968 as an e-1 i was getting 98 dollars a month. Oh and i got an extra 50 bucks for combat pay. I got out as an e-6 in 78 and was making 15,000 a year. Now an e-6 is making about 32,000 or more a year.

There was no job protection then. I would say we have come along way in 30 years. Just because its the law does not mean it is being honored. Very few companies are probably doing what Sears is. They have to bring em back but it does not mean they will keep their jobs down the road. PTS is not taking in consideration when one is trying to adjust to there job once back.

Yes it does happen. I see it all the time when i am taking applications here for employment. Work for six months then are let go if they have other issues. All my new hires are vets. I put them at the top of the list before all others.

Sears actually loses points with me for making this benefit a sales tactic. I included a link to an organization that manages and encourages companies to participate. Find your state and you see that nearly all major companies and many Mom and Pops support this great program.

no to dispute you, but i just went thru the list for Florida. 90 % are either Goverment Agencies, or contractors, subcontractors for Government agencies.

They news reported this and provided this publicity. I can not blame Sears for taking advantage of the opportunity. You do know who sells coffee that is Mountain Grown....... Folger's oh wait 90+% of ALL coffee is mountain grown and Folger's uses that as a selling advantage...... it's just business.

Well the National Guard is under direct control from the State and the Reserves are under the Federal direction. Absolutely they support since it is their organization.

The true situation is that ALL service people are not (sadly) aware of their rights and benefits, people (employers) take advantage of that....... education is a very powerful tool.
