Sears Ted Williams Eska Shift Question

Eska experts: I have 2 project Ted Williams motors - not running yet - that don't seem to have a neutral. I move the shift lever to neutral and pull the rope, the prop still spins. These are oldies with no reverse gear. The lever apparently connects to a clutch dog at the bottom of the power head. Anyone run into this before and can suggest a fix?

Model numbers, please. There are a lot of Ted Williams models, and we don't know which one you're talking about.

As I understand it there is a spring loaded clutch. It corrodes and stops working.Sometimes ingaged others disingaged.Unless the motor is working perfectly I woudn't invest money or much time in the clutch. I think most just modify it so it is all ways ingaged.

Re: Sears Ted Williams Eska Shift Question

CATransplant, I'm kinda bummed, because neither of these has a legible model #, beyond the 217... Should I be able to find the model number anywhere other than the info plate on the transom clamp? It's nice that the old OMCs post it in two locations.

steelespike, the spring loading makes sense. The parts diagram for what looks like a very similar motor (Eska 1747C) just shows a clutch assembly, but I couldn't figure out how it worked. I think I'll take your advice and see how well I can get them to run before deciding what to do about the shift issue.

Thank you both for your input.
