I just got back from an outing on a fresh water river, things were going realy well for a while until we were driving a long and all of a sudden the revs went way up and the boat stop moving, I backed it off and she started to go again, but as soon as I gave it some more throttle she done it again, I drove her back to the ramp at about 8nots no problem, reverese was fine also...

Any ideas?

Sounds like a spun prop hub. Did you have any over heating issues?

No over heating at all, I was one the water about hour max and not really giving it too much, all of sudden we were going slowin a 4 not area and then we put the throttle down and it slipped etc..

Probably a prop hub. You didn't mention any smell of burning rubber so that sort of eliminates the coupler.
You wouldn't overheat with a spun prop or a spun rubber portion of the coupler because at low speeds, it would still turn the impeller in the drive.

You would overheat with a spun coupler. The water pump would stop turning.

You would not overheat with a spun prop. Just the prop is not turning the pump is still turning.

Not exactly.
If the splines are stripped out of the coupler, then and only then will the raw water pump not turn. It's the same for Merc and OMC Cobras.
Now, if the rubber hub is spun, it will continue to turn the pump, just slip and overheat and smoke rolls out of it and you smell burned rubber. But, like a spun rubber prop hub, you will still have the pump turning and forward motion at low rpms.
Two completely different types of coupler failure.

No overheat it's the prop. If it overheated it's the coupler. Shaft splines went you would not be able to move one foot.

All of the above is fact.

Mark, I'd check the prop for a spun hub before I called in the pros. Its as easy as marking the prop/hub (scribe an alignment mark on the prop and hub) test running the boat and re checking the markings after the run. Or borrowing a prop and going for a test run. It could save you some cash.

LT's suggestion seems like it'd be the first thing to check out to me.. pretty easy and for sure cheap to do..

Limited Time's test is the best thing to do, in this case. Don't run to a mechanic for what is probably a very simple solution to a simple problem.

^^^^^ Agree.....
Methinks someone is adding details needlessly.....
It is a classic example of a spun hub.....
Put your spare prop on & see if it remedies the situation....
Don't have a spare?, you should.... ;)

Yes I was talking to the mechanic and he said he believes it could be a spun hub/bush as well but wont know for certain until he takes it off.

Do I have a psare Prop? answer No, as I just purchased the boat and this is my first boat so I am learning as I go, thanks to all your info!!

Re: Seems like the mercriuser slips out of gear

Not knowing boats at all and having just purchased my boat last week, I want it back in the water ASAP, so yea I think I was a bit premature by taking it to the mechanic, After reading all the comments again I know it would have been easier to check it, I guess you learn by expensive mistakes. I am still waiting for the mechanic to call me and let me know what it was. I will be very suprised if its not the prop hub, after reading all your comments. I will just have to sit tight and wait.

Re: Update!! Seems like the mercriuser slips out of gear

WELL!!! I just got a call from the mechanic, he tells me that I have a FLO-TORQ hub style prop. which means I think that it breaks away completely, Hard Plastic. He said its either broken or its not, apparently it dosent wear. So he is saying it is the Coupler (rubber Donut),

He said he is going to take the boat down and put it into the water to make sure,. My question is this! How do you tell if its one or the other in the water? Does it slip differently or will he smell burning rubber????
