I think this engine is seized, I cannot turn it over with a rope and the starter just goes up then stops, I don't want to blow the starter so I tried with the rope but can't get it to turn!!

Is there any reason beside it being seized that this wont turn? Could it be in gear or reverse and maybe that is what is doing it?

I bought the engine from a mechanic near by and trusted his word that it would run, I know the guy, he gave me his number if there are any problems and I know where he lives so I leapt and just bought it. After throwing it on my boat and trying to start it with jumper cables it didn't want to turn (meaning the starter went up then stopped dead), then I tried rope and still nothing!

Before I hit the panic mode is there anything else I can do before I haul this thing back to the guy? Maybe spray something in there and let it sit overnight or anything?? And if I can get the thing to turn over would being seized at one point affect how the engine will perform in the future? Thanks for the help

Before I hit the wall and blow up in this guys face, I need to hear some professional opinions

Not a professional opinion but the first thing I would do is pull the plugs, grab the flywheel and see if you can turn it by hand. If it won't turn time to call the mechanic. If it will I would connect it to a fully charged battery with marine battery cables (no jumpers) and see if it spins (still plugs out). If it spins put the plugs back in and try to start it. If not call the mechanic.

You may get a lot more cooperation from the mechanic if you approach the problem diplomatically rather than blowing up.

Even it its in gear, you can turn it over with the rope or by hand. So it sounds like it is really seized.

I suggest you take it back and spend you money on a motor that you can test run on the water first.

BTW, how much did you spend on the motor? How well do you know him?

S T O P ! !

Don't tinker and complicate things. Like you said you trusted (trust) him,and he gave you his number.

Or you could pull the flywheel, drop the lower unit, rebuild the prop, and do a whole lot of other things to compicate this issue.

Call him and get back to us.

DHP

Re: Seized 1990 48hp Evinrude

I just sprayed PB blaster in there to see if by morning I can loosen the thing up, if not I will call him and demand to get me money back on this thing. I paid $550 for it and he said 1000 times over and I asked 1000 times this runs good- to the point where he got annoyed with me. I spent three hours in his shop BSin with this guy before i bought the engine, he seems nice enough, it's just he is almost two hours away and I can't stand another night driving when I have so much work to be done!

If you have been following my posts this is the 3rd time in a month I have been screwed on an outboard purchase, are there not any trust worthy people on this earth any more?

Sorry you didn't get my post sooner.

But I think I have to say this from a dealer or repair shop or backyard mechanic's view.

You bought this motor from someone you trust.GOOD !

Unfotunately you have a problem.I don't think you'll care for my answer.

Instead of calling the shop, and saying you have a problem, you've done several things to your purchase, and then asked us.

Why didn't you leave it alone, and call where you bought it ?

DHP

DHP: Because I assumed the problem was small, I just tried to call the shop he is in but he wasn't in, he leaves at 5, I will call tomorrow and pray he is understanding and get my money back, I just realized I don't want to mess with this thing!

dude
thats three strikes.
next time dont look for the money deal and insist on a seatrial.
even if by some chance PB would have unstuck it it would have failed. you may get away with it on a tiny mite, for a bit, but once corroded tight its a rebuilder/junker. on pit on the crank or wrist pin bearings, journals and its a toasted beast. KABLEWY.
I hate to bust chops but for what you have spent in time money and aggrevation you could have spent once and been fishing. remember, in this business aint no such thang as a "good" deal. ya get exactly what ya pay for.
hopefully you will get your money back on this one.

I think we are being lead down the ole prim rose path here.

No way can somebody three times in uh row....get uh holt of three dishonest boat motor selles.

Few days back he was bout to cry over his motor. I beleive he is haveing a good laff...at us for trying to figgure out his motor problems.....when he dont even have uh motor.

Types up uh good story tho...Ill say that furem.

I remember back a few months ago..somebody had like a 200 hundred horse that had the lower unit out of it.

Didnt hit nothin..no sound or nothin, But all the gears were ground up into little peices. wanted to know if his waranty would cover it.

Some body typed back...and said....Didnt hit nothin..and no bad sounds.....Who da hell you your talkin to....Ha..Ha!
