im going to paint my duck boat. i'm starting from bare aluminum.these are the steps i was going to follow please tell me if im going about this the write way
1. clean metal with alcohol or a better cleaner?
2. spray with a primer meybe self etching primer
3. apply the camo pattern with stencils

im not real sure what kind of cleaner or primer to use i dont want anything that with react with the aluminum. and i didnt sand down the boat the aluminum isnt real dirty and there isnt much crud not anything that a good cleaner shouldt remove and i thought the self etching would stick better than anything else. i realy have no idea what im doing so any tips would be more than appreciated

You have the right idea MW. After stripping the boat, wipe it down real good with vinegar and water. When you prime it with Zinc Chromate self etching primer, remember you only need to "dust" it, not cover the metal completely. Then you can paint.

Re: self-etching primer

The reason it "etches" is because of the acidity of the coating. The instructions say that the primer need not be so thick that all transparency is lost, but it DOES recommend a "wet coat" so there is enough liquid there to do the etching. And of course, it has to be a continuous film to work anyway.
