SELOC manual confusion

Hello all! Great forum to come across! First post so please bear with me.

I recently purchased a 1986 Fiberking Bomber with a 1986 Mercury Blackmax 150 HP, 2 cycle engine. I purchased a SELOC service manual (to hopefully do all my own maintenance) but can not figure out which model number is mine in the manual. In the appendix, under engine specs, my serial number is not there. Metal plate on the outboard shows the serial # 0B250967. Unless I'm looking at the wrong number on the outboard. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would like to buy spark plugs, fuel filter, etc. soon

You would have been much happier with a OEM manual

Re: SELOC manual confusion

I will take the cover off when I get home this evening and try to locate the disc. The outboard cover has a big "150" & "Black Max oil-injected" label. Was also titled as a 1986 150 HP.

So...if I can locate the disc, and it's S/N matches the title & the metal plate serial # tag, then what does that mean?

Or...if the disc S/N does NOT match the title & the metal plate serial # tag, then what?

Also, how would I know if it is the XR2?

Re: SELOC manual confusion

Until you get the s/n off the disc on the block, we won't know anything. If that number is different, it will mean that someone has changed the powerhead.

The information I gave you is from the Mercury search engine. If you have any doubts take your information to a dealer and ask them to help you.

Let us know when you find the disc.

Re: SELOC manual confusion

Tried to upload pic of the actual bracket where S/N was located, but it is giving me the message of image being too large.

Just got off the phone with my local Mercury Dealer/Repair shop. According to him, getting down to the actual disc (with the S/N number on the engine) would basically require breaking down the entire engine to get to. Not quite as simple as I had hoped. Unless I am in need of some major repair work sometime soon, I probably won't be taken my motor apart, if it is that involved. I'm not that great a mechanic.

He informed me two possible scenarios could have happened...

1) That my Mercury 150 HP outboard's original bracket (where the S/N metal plate is located that I am referring to) could easily have broken and been replaced with the bracket off of a 1988 175 H.P. outboard.

Or...

2) That my 1988 175 HP outboard's bracket is original and that a Mercury 150 HP power head cover (with the "150" sticker) could have come off of another Mercury outboard at one time or another.

He also informed me that Mercury 1986 150 HP & Mercury 1988 175 HP parts are interchangable and not to worry too much. Spark plug specs, fuel filter specs, stator, should all work with each other. Not to doubt the mechanic too much, but is that correct?
