sending unit cork float question....

I am getting ready to mount the tank back in the belly of my 19' Caravelle. I took out the fuel gauge sending unit to pump out the gas when I removed the tank. The float on the sending unit is cork. I know I've read about coating the old cork carb floats with something (varnish?)

Should I coat the sending unit cork float with anything before I put everything back together?

Re: sending unit cork float question....

Orange shellac and old oil base varnish used to be the coatings of choice for cork floats be they sender units or carb floats. Ethanol has changed things.

A good polyuerethane coating or a plastic float is in your future.

Don't you just love government dictates?

Some where in the back of my head clear nail polish comes to mind. Confirm someone?
