I have two mercruiser red tags with serial numbers on my 5.7l motor for an '88 Sea-Ray Sorrento. One tag is on the thermostat housing and says "Transom Assembly" and the other is on Spark Arrestor cover and says "Drive Unit". I'm assuming the "Drive Unit" is the number for the motor, and is what I should use when ordering parts?

Thanks for considering..

Re: Serial Numbers

Your actual serial number is on a metal tag riveted to the block just above the starter. Best bet is to snap a few pics with a camera and decifer what you find. Let us know what you see!!!

Re: Serial Numbers

You use the drive unit if you want drive parts, if you want engine parts you need to get the engine serial number. Should be a tag on the block just above the starter on the block where the bellhousing bolts on.

Re: Serial Numbers

I would think "drive unit" means the outdrive. Your engine serial should be on a stamped tag just above the starter or near the flywheel housing. Post up your numbers and someone can do a lookup for you.
