hi all, just picked up a evinrude 6hp outboard short shaft.

unlike my johnson 35 hp, all it says on the core plug is

c0095994

nothing else....

ive had a look around but cant find anything at all that says year model or correspondence anywhere that picks up any series of nubers like this... does this correspond to letters maybe?

heeeeeeeeeeelp! lol

!!! also,

as i have one fuel connector for both the above outboards and one fuel tank,

1, is this advisable?
2, is the fuel mixture different? could i rnu both on 40:1 to keep the insides happy?
3, even though the new 6hp outboard runs ok and was serviced in may (i have the paperwork), should i still change oil etc? (gearbox), what oils best in uk?

apparently the previous owner said he used 50:50 mixture in the 6hp, surely this is why its difficult to keep ticking over unless on high revs? could there bve another reason for this?

the j35balcib is my other outboard, johnson 35hp 1981 ac lighting rope start. havent had it running yet, but only just picked up the tank, any tips on getting it ready for first start, priming etc would be great,

thanks

40:1 would be fine, but you could run 50:1 if the 6 hp is 1964 or newer. Call a dealer with the serial number if that's all you have. If you are absolutely sure it's a 6 hp, then those began production in 1965.

Look on the transom clamps. There "should" be a tag there with both model and serial number.

IF (only you can decide) your "new" 6 hp is late 60's or later, use 50:1 for both.

There is no reason in the world to run at 40:1 for any reason (again IF the 6 hp is newer than the mid-60s). You'll just be more prone to plug fouling and carbon build up, not to mention excessive pollution.

I do not believe for one minute that the previous owner used 50:50. The engine would not run. You misunderstood him. Think about it: a mixture of 1/2 oil? That's absurd.

RE: the lower unit lube: If you're at all uncertain, just check it! Would you not at least look at the dipstick of any car you bought? If you don't want to waste oil, just remove the drain and vent screws, have your lube bottle ready. Let a few drops drip out. If it looks good, just plug in the lube bottle and top it off. No need to drain completely if it looks clean and fresh.

Finally, there's no reason to have separate tanks for the two engines, especially since they have the same connection. In fact, I use the same Mariner tank for my MERCURY and EVINRUDE kickers. Yes, they have different connections at the engine, but I have a clever little hose adapter that adapts the Merc/Mariner connection to the Evinrude.
