The serial # plate is missing on 120 Force. I don't know the year either. Boat is 1989 Henry O McKee and original motor replaced (I think) as there are 2 additional mounting holes which have been filled.
Are there other ways to determine age? Specific type of carbs, certain other parts, etc?
TY for your help!!!

Posting a picture will help to narrow it down.
If it is a Force by Mercury Marine, it could be 1990-1999.
If it is an old Chrysler, it could be a 1976-77.

Go to the link below, and click on the diagrams for the various years.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=FORC

Compare the lower units, ignigion systems, and tilt and trim units. Several different ignition systems were used between 1989 and 1995. Two different lower units, I think.
This should narrow it down to within a year or three.

Then you can get a few part numbers off the motor and compare them to the ones listed. Check the starter part number.

Actually, there may be a year of manufacture sticker on the starter. This would be the year the starter was made, not the entire motor, but it would be a start.

Not a fun process, but it can be done.

Posting a picture here may help.

Thank you - that link helped. I think I have it narrowed down but I need to make sure. As luck would have it the starter has been replaced. Only sticker is from a rebuilder.

It seems to fit in to the 90-94 section with some parts from a 92C look good. Whatever that menas.

What is an L motor??????

Would love to post a picture - don't know how!!!!

If you have an outboard, you do not have an "L" model.
An "L" model is an "L drive", which has the powerhead mounted inside the boat, much like an inboard.

Each model year has several variations, some were improvements, some variations were just to use up parts in the warehouse.

Example: Model 1206F9A was produced with certain components.
Then later in the year, when they ran out of some parts, they substituted a different part and called it model 1206F9B. Then even later in the year they produced a motor with different parts and called it 1206F9C.

Other companies did the same thing, but Mercury did it alot just after they bought the FORCE line.

I think the biggest differences with those models will be the ignition systems.

Ooops, sorry, missed your question about posting a picture.

Here you go:

First off, the picture has to be on the internet somewhere, not just in your computer.

You can put your pictures up on a free internet picture hosting server. Here is one that is run by SONY
http://www.imagestation.com/

Note, signing up with this site will put you on their mailing list, but what do you expect for nothing?

Sign up, upload your image.

To post a picture on iboats:

Go to the full sized picture on the internet or hosting site, not a thumbnail.
Right click, then click "properties".
Highlight the URL address,
then right click on it and click "copy".
THe URL must end with "jpg"

Now come back to you post here on iboats.
Click the "FULL REPLY FORM" button below the reply dialogue box.
Click the "image" button that appears below the dialog box.
Paste the URL into the text box.
Click ok.
