I need to take the vro tank out of my boat to do some work. I don't intend to take anything apart, just remove the tank briefly to replace the wood shelf it sits on. I can do this without disconnecting anything (just sit the whole thing to the side), but would like to drain the oil from it and clean the tank...also would like to disconnect the hose where it enters the motor (lower port side where the fule line enters as well) so that I can cut an inch or so off and reattach. The original owner used a funky clamp that I don't trust.

I have read that if you disconnect the vro that you need to run pre-mix for a while. Since I am not disconnecting the pump or anything actually on the engine itself, just possibly the oil hose that attaches to the cowling, do I need to pre mix afterwards, or can i just hook the hose back up, fill it with new oil, pump the ball hard, and go?

VRO system is working well and verified pumping on 93 Johnson 150 GLETR.

The service manual says you need to prime the oil system. Pump the oil primer until oil appears w/o air in it, at the motor end of the hose. Now connect it to the VRO pump and pump the bulb once more. At this point, being an amateur, I would fill the oil tank to the top and run 6 gal of premix. After running the premix, refill the oil tank. If it takes about 1 pint of oil, you are good to go. If it won't take any oil, you have a problem with the oil injection system.

Re: serice vro tank

Thanks!

So any time I remove even a hose from the VRO tank, I need to premix a few gallons of fuel and verify it is pumping? I am not messing with the vro unit itself, just the hose that connects the tank to the outside of the motor. I have probably ten gallons of fuel in a 40 gallon tank now...is it ok to run that much premix if indeed it is pumping? Basically, I would be running a double ratio for 10 gallons or so...

You will be draining and cleaning the tank, peace of mind says run a portable tank with pre-mix until you see the oil tank drawing down.
Oil line should be purged of air before connecting to motor w/ ew style clamp.

We did mine all on the hose whilst tuning the engine, by the time we were done it was obvious the oil level was dropping down in the vro tank.

150 horses are thirsty on fuel.!

Thanks! I will pre-mix for peace of mind until the level drops.

What is an ew style clamp? I've never heard that reference, probably just a terminology thing but want to make sure I have the correct clamp.

Any advice on the best way to clean this vro tank? I notice there is a filter in there, should it be replaced or just cleaned with a mild solvent?

If your not sure of the last time it was replaced, and since your going through the trouble of cleaning it, then I would replace it. Fairly cheap precaution.

Sorry that was the New type clamp, missed the N.
They are plastic squeeze clamps that fit better than stainless clamps or tie wraps. And yeh a new sock filter in the tank is a good idea.
Messy job.;)
