Here's the situation.........

Boss got a new laptop and passed the old one along....... THOUGHT all the photos were copied onto CD's (did not ask for help).

When the CD's were placed into the new laptop they are empty

All the photos were sent to the recycle bin and then the bin was emptied......

Is there hope? We still have the old laptop and it has been in use for about 3 weeks by another company person.....

Is there a program to recover the photos or restore them? OR will the HD have to be removed and sent out.

http://www.hiren.info/

It can be a littel hard to find a place to download as it is a 70 MEG file

On the FREE Hiren Cd there are several file recover tools that will find them BUT the more its used the less likely it will work :(

Toast......:(

I ran the program 2 ways (each way took 5 1/2 hours) and ended up with bits and pieces..... got ton's of file names but only bits and pieces of the jpg's. I ended up with about 15 photos out of 1000+.

It had been in another employees work area for a month..... kind of what I expected.

This is a prime example why you should be backing up to another hard drive. Every day at 3:00 AM I have a script that backs up all my files to another second hard drive on my computer and a network drive I have hidden in another area of my house.

Re: Serious deleted item help on computer

to only have had them on the computer was bad to start, then to write a cd and not CHECK IT before deleting is worse.

Of everything I have on my computers, my pictures are #1 priority. Music after that.

Double onsite storage on 2 different machines with 1 copy that gets backed up off site in case my house burns down.

Bruce, I take care of the computers for a small construction company, every night an xcopy script simply copies the important directories to one of the other machines. Every 2 weeks I go onsite, do my checkups/repairs and burn a cd. Last month, the computer running the finacial program for the company up and crashed HARD...... 4 houurs later they were up and running with NO data loss. I was happy.

Bob,

I hope you get this in time. There is a way to recover the files, the program you used is not that good, it seems to find lots of files but never can recover anything good, nor with the right files names. The solution you need to get is Photo Recovery Software, which I have used. It helped me to recover over 100 gigs of photos ive collected over the years and kept all the filename intact.

Goodluck!

My wife's computer trashed a drive; running chksum or checksum got 1/2 of her files back. A thought.

Yea, that's a bummer for sure......but it's pretty normal. If that box was with another employee for a month, they wrote lots of files to and from the HD in the normal course of operating the computer. The OS will write to the file areas marked as deleted and recovery is limited at best. If the error was caught early and little or no disk activity, then you would have had better success. Sorry for your loss, but the bright side is it usually happens only once....it's a learning experience.
