I ordered an owners manual for my motor because most here feel it is necessary but a friend that is helping me rebuild it says we need the parts list and service manual. Can someone tell me if that criteria is in the owners manual? I ordered from Ken Cook...here is a link to all the literature that is available through them, which would you recommend? Thanks for any advice

Re: service manual vs. owners manual

Unless your motor is very old (pre 1960), the are several on line sources of part list info, including BRP Evinrude and Master Tech http://www.maxrules.com/

Service manuals for newer than 1997 motors are available from BRP Evinrude and outboardbooks.com for older motors. Paper parts lists are also available for pre 1997 motors from outboardbooks.com

You're gonna want that service manual. The owner's manual won't give you
exploded views, detailed parts lists, or procedures for disassembley/ re-assembley. GH

owners manual tells you how to start it, and wash it. worthless.

look up searayman13 on ebay.

Re: service manual vs. owners manual

Thanks alot guys, guess I'll order the service manual.
another quick question... my motor is a 87 Johnson 48 spl and I believe it was only made for a couple years, if I could get a deal on an 88 manual would you advise it? Could there be that many differences? I realize this is opinionated :)

There shouldn't be any difference in one year. You should be okay ordering that manual. Since I've responded to your question, people will be quicker to correct me. LOL:D:D:D

Exactly ! Owners manuals tell you just enough to get you into trouble. Or tell you to see an authorized service technician for anything more involved then making sure the plug is in.:p

Re: service manual vs. owners manual

I made every mistake with manuals,
first I bought an official shop manual off ebay that turned out to be a seloc,
I gave that away.

So then I ordered the owners manual, another $45 stupid move. Theres NOTHING in it! 40 pages for $45.!

Finally got the proper factory service book.:p

Re: service manual vs. owners manual

I feel ya brother...thanks to tashasdaddy I found the parts catalog for $12 and the service manual for half price but there is a years difference. Thanks for the info guys!! So if another lost soul finds their self in this situation the answer is BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL, not the OWNERS MANUAL
