Thinking about servicing my outdrive this year on my own. Is there anything I should know before tackling this project? Any special tools required?

The outdrive is alpha one Gen II.

Re: Servicing Lower Unit

Servicing usually means changing oil, lubing u-joints, changing impellor, checking gimbal bearing, checking bellows, and checking alignment.

Only special tool you'll need for that is an alignment bar. Usually less than $50 off Ebay.

If you're going to be changing bellows, water hoses, etc, then you'll need the 12 point bellhousing pin removal tool and a water line tool. Replacing an exhaust bellows is possible without the exhaust bellows tool, but the tool makes it unbelievably easier. 30 seconds with the tool vs 2 hours of aggravation without it.

If you decide you need to change the gimbal bearing, you'll require a puller and some kind of bearing installation tool.

If your lower shift cable is bad, you'll need the special extended 9/16 socket to change it.

If you're talking about actually digging into the lower unit, changing seals, bearings, gears, etc, the list of special tools is about a page long if i remember correctly ......
