I recently got a 28hp 1962 (RX 10) Johnson outboard going. It’s done about 20 hours work since its rebirth and starts pretty easily (3 to 4 pulls) .I’m going further out into the bay since it’s seems to be a reliable motor and was wondering how often do you service these motors.
For example how often do you

Change spark plugs
Change fuel pump diaphragm
Rebuild carb
Change points
Check gearbox oil

Also are there any tell tale signs that may indicate future problems .The motor seems pretty basic so I’m assuming that so long as it’s used regularly it shouldn’t need much up keep ,but I’m no mechanic.

To get the motor going we

Replaced spark plug leads
Replaced fuel pump diaphragm
Installed carby kit
Installed water pump kit
Replaced drive shaft oil seal under impellor
Replaced gear box oil (checked after 10 hours use no leaks)
Cleaned points and checked gap
Replaced all fuel lines

Any feedback appreciated
Regards Kevin

I change plugs and lower gear oil every season, needed or not. Each year I keep the old plugs in the boat til next year. Change/adjust points if running rough. Other stuff such as fuel pump diaphragm, carb kits just "as needed" when a problem is noted. Water pump impellor in salt water every year, in fresh water every three years

I pretty much agree with George. But I'd probably add the points to the plugs if used a lot. Gear oil should be checked for water intrusion more frequently, and changed seasonally (just crack the drain plug open a bit to see if there is water present).

Did you ever find a OMC service manual? I can send you a copy if you want? Just PM me with your email address.
