setting electric choke on 4 barrel weber

i am replacing the round part of the electric choke on this 4 barrel weber, the part where the two wires connect. i am wondering how to set this up, do i have to start with the engine cold or hot then put it on and adjust it? please let me know, thanks.

With the engine cold, install it and turn it so the choke just closes, then tighten it up.

Thank you, now i have to wait for the engine to cool off as i originally tried with it warm. I have another question if you know about it. Inside the other part of the choke (the part that is still connected to the carb) inside there is some sort of a barrel or a "piston" i'm not sure what this does or why its there. What is that and what does it do. The only reason i'm asking is because it seems like it is dragging, should it be completely free? thanks again. The rest of the choke will flap around freely if i disconnect that.

It's probably a vacuum pull on the choke which helps open it as well.

When the engine initially starts, the choke must be opened a little bit or the engine will run too rich and not idle well. The plunger is indeed a choke pull-off. Engine vacuum pulls the choke plate open a bit and the electric choke heats the bi-metal spring which causes the choke to open the rest of the way in a controlled fashion.

thanks, i will leave the choke slightly open like you said. also, i took the whole thing off and freed up that "piston" or what ever it is called. it actually just seems like some sort of a weight to pull down on the choke plates but it was corroded pretty bad.
