I have a 15' modified-V hull that I want to mount a 15 hp outboard. The distance from the top of the transom to the bottom center of boat is 17.5" Do I need a short or long shaft?? Thanks!!

Re: Shaft Lenght?

i dont know which outboard you are looking at but i have older omcs. the short shafts measure around 17" and the long shaft is 22". my nephew has a 15hp mercury around the year 2000 and it also measures around 22". so maybe a short shaft would work best.

DANG! I hate those non-standard transoms and engines.

Get a newer long shaft 15 HP and raise it on the transom. It is always easier to raise an engine than to cut out a transom.

Re: Shaft Lenght?

thats why i said short shaft. if you put a long on there it would hang too low. i agree it is easier to raise than lower. you are right though the short shaft might hang too high. if it was one of my older motors i have it would be ok at 17.5" with a short shaft.

thanks. Non-standard is right. It has been giving me trouble with a short shaft 9.9 I have. I will take your advice and get the long 15 and raise it if I have too. Thanks!!
