have a 20 inch shaft right now and considering a new motor - can i go with a 25inch shaft - the current motor cavitates unless i use a stainless prop but the true length of the trans is 20inchs.

20, and mount it at the correct height.

You can hang it high on a jackplate which is also hung high.
