Shear pin problems on Merc 3.3

Guys, I purchased this motor last year to use for duck hunting in shallow marshes and have gone through 4 shear pins in probably 15 uses. I haven't been that hard on it, simply running through small bits of vegetation seems causes it to shear. Is there something I can check that may be causing this besides hitting something? Also, are there different types of shear pins? I really haven't felt any of the 'hits' and it's really starting to be a problem.

Scott

I know that question sounds really stupid, mainly because I'm new to owning an outboard motor. Am I being unrealistic in my expectations with this motor? Other guys I know are running 5 hp motors through the same stuff with no problems whatsoever, which makes me wonder if this isn't something else that might be wrong? Sorry for asking a neophyte question.

Scott

Hey drifter are you using a plastic or aluminum prop? If you are using the plastic prop, change over to the aluminum shear pin. I've seen alot of what you describe and changing pins takes care of that with no apparent ill effects to the prop or engine.

Good Luck!! :)
